Bodies are piling up all over the second amendment as two of America’s pandemics converge. The “plague of gun violence” and the inability to mount an effective response, even in the wake of multiple mass shootings, is, unfortunately, rooted in the other pandemic gripping the United States: anti-Blackness and the sense that African Americans are a dangerous threat that can only be neutralized or stopped by a well-armed white citizenry.

I did a double-take this morning listening to the ABC Radio lead-off. The announcer intoned quite seriously: “The pandemic is ending, and once again Americans are shooting each other”.

This is a argument that’s become quite fashionable among firearms prohibitionists: alleging that the Second Amendment (along with other aspects of US constitutional heritage) is racist in origin.
Why is then that Jefferson (”No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms”) requested his slaves be freed upon his death and that he provided for them to learn trades as to find jobs upon their freedom? And that Washington also wished his slaves freed upon his death.
Also to ask Ms. Anderson, why is that it would take criminals in the United States and Canada many hundreds of centuries to equal the number murdered by four governments in Nazi Germany (Hitler), Soviet Russia (Stalin), China (Mao Zedong), and Cambodia (Pol Pot) in just one?
