“It’s time to put down the gavel,” Patrick Leahy declared a few minutes ago in bowing out of the 2022 midterms. “It’s time to pass the torch to the next Vermonter.” It’s the identity of the next Vermonter that will worry Democrats, who have to defend another open seat in an election cycle that looks to be a disaster already.
It doesn’t help that the heir apparent within Democrat ranks is only seven years younger than Leahy himself:
Leahy is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and also president pro tempore of the Senate, making him third in the line of succession to the presidency.
Vermont, where President Biden won with 66 percent of the vote last year, has not been represented in the U.S. Senate by a Republican since 2001. The state’s current junior senator is Bernie Sanders, 80, a self-described democratic socialist who caucuses with the Democrats.
But Phil Scott, the state’s governor since 2017, has demonstrated that a Republican can still prevail in a statewide race in Vermont. He was last reelected last year with nearly 69 percent of the vote.
Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), the state’s only congressman, is viewed as Leahy’s most likely successor. He is 74.

Most remarkable fact: Leahy is the only Democrat to have ever represented Vermont in the Senate.
Wow! The Old Granite State has changed.
This *should* be an easy Repub pick up, in a normal world.
To put this in perspective, Leaky Leahy has been in office since before the movie Saturday Night Fever.
Also the original Star Wars, starring my high-school classmate and leftist sycophant Mark Hamill.
You went to school with Master Talus from Knightfall? LOL
Wow! The Old Granite State has changed.

New Hampshire is the Granite State
Vermont is the Green Mountain state
Been it’s going to run for that seat, too, making him the only Senator with 2 votes. And Vermont is likely to go along with the scheme.
Its WAY past time for that drunk to retire to continue his alcoholism at home.
Good riddance. I never did find out... was he always drunk or had he had a stroke?
A real POS human being. A real waste of air and space above ground. I wish he would occupy less space (above ground).
(Take up mining)? /s
Oh Hell yes. Not sorry to see him go. At. All. He’s done a lot of damage in his time.
Patrick Leahy is, most likely, the nastiest man in the Senate, from anywhere!
He was the first Crusader and last Jedi.
He’s one of those actors who has to play old rugged men because he hasn’t aged as gracefully as a lot of other actors have.
This seat comes up every 50 years, GOP needs
to spend whatever it takes to get it.
Also, when old old Commie Bernie retires GOP
needs that seat and then Dems will not get the
senate majority for decades.
It seems very rare for a dem pol to announce that he’s accumulated enough dough through grifting tax revenue, lobbyist bribes, and “campaign donations” to go off and live like the monarch he believes himself to be.
Leahy’s leaving? Party time.
He’s made enough money, now he can retire.
