More than 100 millionaires say current tax systems are “not fair” and increasing wealth tax would help resolve inequalities made dramatically worse by the Covid health crisis.
Millionaires from around the world have signed an open letter asking governments to tax them at higher rates.
The letter was published online Wednesday, mid-way through Davos, the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting being held virtually this year.
The signatories of the letter, which was the result of a joint initiative from inequality advocacy groups Patriotic Millionaires, Millionaires for Humanity and TaxMeNow, said current tax systems were “not fair”.
While only 100 millionaires signed the open letter, signatory Djaffar Shalchi, founder of Millionaires for Humanity, told FRANCE 24 it was a way to counter the narrative that taxing the wealthy hurts business development and damages the economy. “Millionaires have a unique role to play in advocating for wealth tax,” he said. “We want politicians to understand that not all millionaires agree with the policy of decreasing taxes for the rich.”
For political leaders at Davos, the open letter delivered a more direct warning. “History paints a pretty bleak picture of what the endgame of extremely unequal societies looks like”, they wrote. “It’s taxes or pitchforks.”

Suuuuurrrrrreeeee they did
What stops them from just sending it in?

I proposed a Shallow Exponent Flat Tax.
https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/4006199/posts
Something like Tax = 10% X {[Income]^1.05}
but with the flat tax coefficient more like 2.4 and the exponent more like 1.13......

You could just redistribute it yourselves.
Somehow this tax will impact the middle class more than any other. Bank on it.
Nobody is stopping them from giving their money away.
Nobody.
No one has to TELL you to send in money. Write a check and send it in. Be the first. Invite the press and make a big ta do so others will follow your example. Boy, taking care of the rich is exhausting. S/O
To anyone they choose?
No bureaucrat required?
This is probably some scheme to put a capital gains “death tax” on homes to prevent middle class parents from passing their property on to their children
“They do realize that they can just give the money away right?”
Of course they do. This is just virtue signaling to atone for their sins of being rich.
They don’t need to have the government increase the tax rate.
NOTHING is stopping them from donating more to the government if they really want to.
Just fire 3/4 of your tax accountants.
These kind of things hit the people who are making money, not the ones who have made their pile.
They are not threatened by government, they own enough of it to have no fear. But those kulaks! Something must be done about them.
Well if all of the wealthy are so agreeable, just let them help the needy through charity. Why is an involuntary tax necessary?
Uh huh, that’s why they hire tax attorneys.
They can donate all the money they wish. their failure to do so is their own moral failing, not that of others.
Probably the real agenda is that if these new tax structures are put in place, it would prevent more millionaires from popping up and encroaching on their territory. Oligarchy is the goal with these “movements.”
OK fine. You idiots know there’s nothing stopping you from writing a check to the treasury of your home country for any amount you believe you should be paying.
Just do it, and STFU.
Feeding the alligators in hopes they come for you last, and the billionaires own the means of production for alligator feed. Saying one thing for message but hiring millions of accountants to do another. Deeds / Words mismatch.
