The family of an unarmed black man who was shot and killed in his car by sheriff’s deputies over a year ago has reached a $3 million settlement with authorities.
Andrew Brown Jr. was killed on April 21, 2020 by Pasquotank County sheriff’s deputies while they were serving drug-related warrants at his home. His family filed a $30 million civil rights lawsuit claiming he died because the officers displayed an “intentional and reckless disregard of his life.”
As officers surrounded his BMW, Brown backed up and moved forward, prompting the deputies to open fire. He was fatally struck in the back of his head.

I’m sort of familiar with the story. I think it had everything to do with a typical case of police officers being allowed to open fire on a suspect trying to flee in their car.
The rationale is that the police are in fear for their lives as they are afraid the suspect is trying to run them over. That excuse hardly holds water when the suspect is 50 yards away from the cops and is traveling in the opposite direction with no chance of hitting the cops unless they were to turn around.
No matter. Courts have routinely allowed cops to shoot fleeing suspects in this manner.
It was my misfortune to be a law abiding white person. I could never provide for my family as this person did.
The taxpayers ultimately pay this.
Don’t shoot unarmed suspects in the back of the head and your odds of getting hit with a wrongful death suit goes way down.

What might that be? They were serving a warrant on him so he wasn't one of God's finest specimens. He tried to get away, not a capital offense in any state. He was unarmed and not presenting a threat to the life or safety of the officers or bystanders. Police shot him in the back of the head. Hard to see where that's not wrongful death.

I have a hard time accepting police shooting unarmed suspects, be they Andrew Brown or Ashli Babbitt. To be a police officer is not a license to kill.
It seems that every time a young or middle age black guy is killed by a cop he’s doing something illegal and dangerous. And this one’s no exception.
Andrew Brown was a well know drug dealer in NE North Carolina. The Sheriff’s and Drug Enforcement officers went to his home in early morning and he was already in his car. He refused the warrant and attempted to drive through the yard brushing against one of the officers. He had an extensive criminal record and had served time on several occasions. No criminal charges were filed against the officers - properly so. This man was big-time drug pusher undoubtedly responsible for the death of users. He wasn’t married but had a number of children by different women. The kids get the money, (and lawyers) some of which already have criminal records. The black community have made him a martyr. I don’t know why the case was settled at all. The officers acted properly.
Gosh-—THERE GOES the Section 8 housing & all those other welfare benefits !!!!!!
An entrepreneurial attorney might make similar money suing for wrongful death against gangs in Chicago.

He had his hands upon the wheel, but his foot was on the trigger...metaphorically speaking. The vehicle is just as dangerous, and maybe more than a semi-automatic assault weapon. He died, I would infer from the event, that the world is a little bit better place now.
A felon fleeing police on foot or in a vehicle, SHOULD be gunned down. Any other event leads to everyone disrespecting the police. Look at how lax law enforcement has led to insanity.
Compare today to say the way back year of 1985. I’ll take that time anyday.
