As Donald J. Trump weighs whether to open an unusually early White House campaign, a New York Times/Siena College poll shows that his post-presidential quest to consolidate his support within the Republican Party has instead left him weakened, with nearly half the party’s primary voters seeking someone different for president in 2024 and a significant number vowing to abandon him if he wins the nomination.
By focusing on political payback inside his party instead of tending to wounds opened by his alarming attempts to cling to power after his 2020 defeat, Mr. Trump appears to have only deepened fault lines among Republicans during his yearlong revenge tour. A clear majority of primary voters under 35 years old, 64 percent, as well as 65 percent of those with at least a college degree — a leading indicator of political preferences inside the donor class — told pollsters they would vote against Mr. Trump in a presidential primary.
Mr. Trump’s conduct on Jan. 6, 2021, appears to have contributed to the decline in his standing, including among a small but important segment of Republicans who could form the base of his opposition in a potential primary contest. While 75 percent of primary voters said Mr. Trump was “just exercising his right to contest the election,” nearly one in five said he “went so far that he threatened American democracy.”

Trump changed the conversation on immigration, trade, and energy, and made positive improvements in all three area.
“...anyone over 75...”
Regarding Trump’s age, I’m OK with it - as long as he has someone better than Pence waiting as veep.
Anyone with half a brain, knows that the New York Times, is ONLY a propaganda machine..and exist to influence voters to their odd view of the world. I wouldn’t place any value at all to their reporting. When they start talking about the contents of the Hunter Laptop, maybe..just perhaps.. I would think them slightly a bit serious. Meanwhile they are just in the same boat as the ENQUIRER.
Lol. Like the NYT is a reputable news source.
Trump did cut taxes.
Not my taxes.
Nobody seriously expected him to balance the budget, not in his first term.
It's not just a case of him failing to balance the budget in his first term, though. I would have been okay with it if he just kept the red ink to the level it was when he was sworn in. Yet our deficit increased, hitting the $1 trillion mark under his watch. And that was before the pandemic ruined the economy.
And no, Hillary wasn't going to prison.
So you think it's okay for a politician to make promises he has no intention of keeping? Isn't that the sort of thing we should expect from a Washington insider, not the guy who promised to drain the swamp?
I do think Trump loves his country and wants to help. I just don't trust a populist to know/care what is the correct Free Republican way to help.
TrumpRyanCare, Trump SwampVax, etc.
So who is your candidate?
Says you.
Says Trump's birth certificate, more like.
Still doing multiple rallies every month and showing no signs of slowing down or decline, in fact, he appears to thrive on the battle.
The problem isn't so much with his physical health as with his fiscal irresponsibility in running up the deficit and sticking future generations with the bill, something that old farts of both parties have a problem with.
In absolute terms, Trump was awful.
Relative to all the other losers in Washington, he was awesome.
Well, nobody is declared, but...
I would vote for Ron over Don in a hypothetical primary match.
I will do the only responsible thing and vote for whatever R ends up running in the general.
It did not mention 75% of GOP voters reject DeSantis (25%), 93% of GOP voters do not choose Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas (7%), or the more than 94% who prefer someone other than Mike Pence (6%), Nikki Haley (6%), or Mike Pompeo (2%).
Your preferred candidate for 2024 is dead in the water.
You're whistlin' past the graveyard if you think that DeSantis is a viable candidate for 2024!
Pre COVID the USA was running smoothly. So I have no idea what the hell you asinine Trump basher are talking about. You Trump bashers are so full of sh!t your eyes are brown.
But Desantis knows what you anti Trumpists are up to and is too smart to take the bait.
Oh, before I forget, to all anti Trumpists - FOAD.
Trump: N.Y. Times Is ‘Truly the Enemy of the People’!
The New York Times’ stock is down 40% in the past year, drawing the attention of former President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
“Wow! The Failing New York Times is really failing now: Down more than 40%, and heading lower. Fake news!” Trump wrote Tuesday on Truth Social.
Trump’s rebuke also comes after the Times managed to suggest Trump’s 49% support in its latest poll for the top 2024 GOP presidential candidate means “half” of GOP voters were “ready to leave Trump behind.”
A look under the headline dripping with activism did not mention Trump is actually a 24-point favorite over his closest challenger, Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The Tuesday morning headline read: “Half of G.O.P. Voters Ready to Leave Trump Behind, Poll Finds.”
Trump issued a longer rebuke of the “failing” newspaper in a statement from his Save America PAC.
“The failing New York Times is down 40% year-to-date because they are fake news,” Trump wrote. “Their reporters are dishonest, and their front page has become a work of total fiction, not news. They hate our country, and they hate reporting the truth, which is why America is not respected and our nation has never been weaker.
“Instead, they obsess over Jan. 6, just like they did over Impeachment Hoax #1, Impeachment Hoax #2, the Mueller witch hunt, and Russia, Russia, Russia. The New York Times will continue to decline because people no longer believe their reporting is even close to being true. Fake polls, phony stories, and made up quotes — they are a disgrace to journalism and have set it back many many years. The New York Times is truly the enemy of the people.”
Earlier this month, Trump ripped a Times report that claimed he was going to make his 2024 campaign announcement early, as soon as July 4. It was a Times story debunked, coincidentally, by time.

Online allows a very small group that is noisy think they are more prolific than they are… the anti trump set her at FR aren’t pleanriful… it’s the same handful of names who show up and pitch this nonsense…
Wisconsin has determined lots of illegality went on in 2020… not only the drop box ruling that just came down but that democratic counties were illegally curing ballots while republicans were following the laws.. etc etc etc.
Refusing to take a case is not the equivalent of the claims being invalid..
we will wait and see..
Trump is the most dominant person in politics today, the loud small folks claiming otherwise are amusing.
Thanks for playing.
Considering that my taxes went nowhere but up during Trump’s presidency, I don’t think the wealth of the average American is Trump’s priority either.
Thank you for posting that. I believe you're on the mark.
