WASHINGTON — It’s not just curiosity killing the cat anymore — it could be the Army.
The Army Medical Research and Development Command has quietly allowed shooting cats and dogs for wound experiments despite a 1983 Defense Department ban on the practice, according to a policy update obtained by The Post.
While the change was made as early as 2020, it’s being publicized for the first time after the Army command turned aside a bid by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to find out how many such experiments had been conducted since the switch.

“Because they are experimenting with different projectiles? It’s mostly 9mm in the hoods. They already know what those do.”
Lots of .38 Spl; .380 (same diameter as 9mm, but a smaller bullet and lighter load); .223; some shotgun slugs, and some buckshot; some .40; some 10mm.
In any event, we’ve had a lot of combat experience over the last 20 years or so, and have and have had ample opportunity to study wound dynamics. We don’t have to resort to killing cats and dogs when we can study the real thing.
This reminds me of the movie “The Plague Dogs.” It’s something Fauci would commission.
Experimental rifle and pistol projectiles?
I don’t like thee idea much either. All those rounds you listed are not new experimental projectiles though.
That’s probably about right, and those FMJ might account for so many wounded vs killed.
“guess they never heard of the goat lab...”
I know there was a movie, “Men Who Stare At Goats,” a few years back. Is there gonna be a sequel?
“I don’t like thee idea much either. All those rounds you listed are not new experimental projectiles though.”
The article said nothing that I could see about new and experimental projectiles.
So what did it say the purpose was?
goat lab was for medic’s during Nam
a goats were shot and the medic had to keep it alive for three days then it was euthanized
University Medical Center in New Orleans, for example. Its ER/trauma center has been used for training military medical personnel.
Any SF medic can tell you about the dog lab. I am alive because of their training.
Army playing cops? It’s usually the other way around.
I’ve heard of it, or something like it. Goes back a long ways.
Why not use feral pigs?
I agree
However they don’t know the initial starting conditions. Caliber, powder load, distance, etc.
We could if we just took the violent criminals and used them instead. Animals could live on as pets, PETA would shut up, law abiding folks would be happy and grateful, taxpayers not paying for lifers to be locked up, no real downside here...
Why not Nutria?
“We could if we just took the violent criminals and used them instead.”
I’m laughing, because I proposed that very same thing 50 years ago.
Well you beat me by 25 years...
The US Army I remember loves dogs. Did Obama change that too????
