A new poll shows overwhelming support for the Right to Keep and bear arms amendment to the Iowa Constitution.

From desmoinseregister.com:

A new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll found 58% of likely voters  plan to vote for the proposed amendment in the Nov. 8 midterm election. Thirty-seven percent of likely voters would vote against it, and another 6% are not sure.

The great seal of Iowa features a citizen soldier armed with a musket. The Great Seal, has, in bold letters emblazoned on the banner near the top of the Seal:

“Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.”

In spite of those bold words, Iowa is one of only six states which do not have protection in the state constitution for the right to keep and bear arms.

At the time of the adoption in 1847, the right to keep and bear arms was not controversial.

The Amendment will be on the ballot.

Similar amendments in other states have passed with large margins.

Anyone know what the other states are?

From the article:

The five states which will continue without protection for the right to keep and bear arms in their state constitutions are California, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York.

Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.

The devil will be in the details.

Even if Zeldin wins, the NYS Legislature will never allow anything pro-gun to come to a vote. Dems hold power in the State.

Why is that needed? It is the 2nd Amendment.

Add ILL-eye-noise to that list. It has a useless state 2nd amendment that is prefaced by the statement “subject to police power blah blah...”. If the police can decide if your “rights: are under their control...it is completely useless.

All five of these states probably rank pretty high in the “gun violence” category.

"Why is that needed? It is the 2nd Amendment."

The Federal Constitution and Federal Bill of Rights did not repeal the state Bills of Rights. This is acknowledged at the Constitutional Convention.

Mr. SHERMAN, was for securing the rights of the people where requisite. The State Declarations of Rights are not repealed by this Constitution; and being in force are sufficient.

Iowa needs an Amendment of this effect because as a jurisdiction, Iowa is vulnerable.

That doesn’t make sense. In other words, the Constitution is powerless unless repeated in a state constitution.

Meh…

It’s never been a controversy in Iowa. Only reason for it now is federal interference.

If my history is correct, the Civil War started when Dred Scott escaped to Iowa and his owners were prevented from chasing him, capturing him in Iowa and taking him back to MO. The underground railroad in Iowa helped slaves elude capture.
