Former President Donald Trump ripped into President Joe Biden on Thursday for the prisoner swap with Russia that left former Marine Paul Whelan behind.
The Biden administration announced that WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner would be released from Russia in exchange for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer.
“What kind of a deal is it to swap Brittney Griner, a basketball player who openly hates our Country, for the man known as ‘The Merchant of Death,’ who is one of the biggest arms dealers anywhere in the World, and responsible for tens of thousands of deaths and horrific injuries,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Griner, who plays for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, was among the athletes who objected to the national anthem being played before games, according to the Arizona Republic.
As for Bout, he was convicted in 2011 of trying to kill American citizens through arms deals that included working with Al-Qaida and the Taliban, The New York Times reported.
Trump said the deal leaves behind an American who should have been released — Whelan.
“Why wasn’t former Marine Paul Whelan included in this totally one-sided transaction? He would have been let out for the asking. What a ‘stupid’ and unpatriotic embarrassment for the USA!!!” Trump wrote.
Whelan, who worked in corporate security after leaving the Marine Corps, was arrested in Russia in December 2018. In June 2020, he was convicted on espionage charges, which American officials have said were false and politically motivated, according to The New York Times.

I have never seen a picture of the Griner half-wit with her mouth closed. Her arrest was a set up. There have been several memes hoping for sympathy, and getting none. Thousands of comments to the contrary. I think the Biden admin figured they would go ahead with the deal anyway. It was a scam.

He was. One really has to phuck up to get the Big Chicken Dinner (BCD). He was an NCO at the time which makes it even worse in my opinion. His own family says the Griner deal was the best choice. That’s gotta tell you the guy is a real piece of work.
Actually, you should read Trump's tweet instead of relying on a headline. Trump's primary complaint was about the "Merchant of Death being released. Trump did refer to Whelan as a former Marine, but so what.

I wouldn’t actually call that scorched earth, but it’s a good start. Has anyone called Trump a racist and homophobe over these comment. If so, he’s over the target with the correct zeal.

As an honorably discharged Marine, I can say there is no spin. Whelan was a POS. He got dishonorably discharged. That negates him “putting on the uniform”.
This gives leftists a great comeback and talking point, yet again.
He was in prison when Trump was President. Why didn’t Trump get him out?
And four different passports, and had made several trips to Russia. He might not have been a US spy…he sure sounds like someone’s spy.
