Ohio train derailment: Operators warned of overheated axle moments before wreck: NTSB

The operators of the Norfolk Southern train involved in a toxic derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, earlier this month received a "critical audible alarm message instructing the crew to slow and stop the train to inspect a hot axle," according to a newly released National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report Thursday.

With absolutely no information regarding what caused the derailment, Buttigieg blamed this on Trump and his deregulation. Turns out, after three weeks, it was an overheated break/axel that was detected by 2 to 3 trackside sensors. Had nothing to do with Trump and deregulation. Will we get an apology from Buttigieg for lying about the cause of the accident? I won’t hold my breath.

The equipment defect detectors are at strategic points along all of the routes used by the Class 1 railroads.. that would detect the axle and the position on the train.

Wonder if someone told the train to ignore the warning(s) and continue on anyway?
IF so, who? And why? In this day and age, NOTHING would be surprising.

How long does it take to stop a train?

To preclude disasters like East Palestine, trains carry hazardous materials should have much lower speed limits in congested areas. A 100 car Train weighing 10 million pounds needs substantial reductions in speed limits because they cannot stop readily if an axle malfunction happens, especially in residential areas. Its amazing railroad personnel cannot understand that.

Was the engineer texting to his girlfriend? Or did the former captain of the Costa Concordia get a new job with Norfolk Southern?

Early reports stated that personnel on the train reported up the chain to the railroad company requesting permission to stop and inspect and were denied and told to continue to the next stop.

I have read this and also read that the “hot wheel” alarms went to the dispatch center and not to the engineer directly and they did not notify them until just before the incident.

Either way, if we believe the surveillance video from 20km prior to the crash there was time to stop the train prior to the derailment so theoretically the safety alerts were given but the company did not act in response until it was too late.

Trains can't stop quickly or swerve. The average freight train is about 1 to 1¼ miles in length (90 to 120 rail cars). When it's moving at 55 miles an hour, it can take a mile or more to stop after the locomotive engineer fully applies the emergency brake. An 8-car passenger train moving at 80 miles an hour needs about a mile to stop. How does this compare to other vehicles?

According to the National Safety Council:

A lightweight passenger car traveling at 55 miles an hour can stop in about 200 feet in an emergency - under perfect conditions - that is, if tires and brakes are in good condition and the road is dry.

A commercial van or bus will need about 230 feet to stop.

A commercial truck/trailer can stop in about 300 feet - that's the length of a football field.

A light rail train requires about 600 feet to stop - the length of two football fields.

Compared to this, the average freight train we mentioned above traveling at 55 miles an hour may take the length of about 18 football fields to stop.

Trains can't swerve - they can only follow the track. The only thing the engineer can do is apply the emergency brake.

It's Closer and Faster Than You Think!

In the same way that airplanes can seem to move slowly, your eyes can play a trick on you when a train is approaching - an optical illusion that makes a train seem farther away and moving more slowly than it really is.

Don't take chances - it's easy to misjudge a train's speed and its distance, especially at night.

If you see a train, just wait.

These LIARS should be shot. America is based on TRUTH: We hold these TRUTHS to be self-evident. LIARS in positions of authority are TRAITORS and deserve no less than capital punishment.

There warning system sucks if a train can travel for more than 20 miles with a sparking over heated axle and that problem is not quickly detected. In the days of cheap wireless equipment then how could it be that the entire train is not rigged with video cameras and sensors that detect this condition immediately. Especially when hauling such dangerous chemicals. The train company should be held criminally liable.

So, first, the regulations in question would not have applied to this train. Second, even if the regulations had applied, the brakes would not have helped for each of several reasons - including the actual cause of the derailment - even if it wasn’t caused by an axle seizing.

Probably a money issue. Not sure how profitable train systems are. I know that Amtrak has lost money every year since 1971, and many of the metro trains lose money as well. One would think that freight trains do alright, but not sure what condition the track systems are in.
