Apple will manufacture iPhones at a new plant in India, officials said Friday, as the US tech giant seeks to ramp up its India production and diversify away from China.
The flagship mobile's global supply chain is based mainly in China, where strict Covid policies last year and ongoing diplomatic tensions with the United States have hurt production.
"Apple phones to be built in the state soon," Karnataka state chief minister Basavaraj S Bommai tweeted on Friday.
"Apart from creating about 100,000 jobs, it will create a whole lot of opportunities for Karnataka," he added.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India's minister of state for information technology, said the proposed factory will be spread over 300 acres in the state, home to India's tech hub Bengaluru.
The announcement came as Foxconn chairman Young Liu visited that city on Friday, according to local media, following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week.
Apple said last September it would manufacture its latest iPhone 14 in India, just weeks after launching the flagship model.

So, they’ll come with call-center scams pre-installed?
The article seems to miss the point - that, for years, Foxconn has been plagued with employee suicides so much that they installed nets outside the building to catch the jumpers.
Is there a problem with building the plant in the IS or is the company determined to build in our enemies countries?
Does India, and especially Bangalore, have the infrastructure and power to support such a 24x7 manufacturing plant?
On a side note, Apple and Foxconn will have plenty of electricity to power the new factory. Companies do not build where they cannot access reliable, consistent energy (no sustainable, renewable crapola). India announced recently they are ramping up their coal mining operations in order to create all the electricity their citizens want and need. There is ZERO talk of ‘transition’ to ANYTHING ELSE.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s entire electrical grid may soon collapse. It wasn’t bad enough that the Marxist ANC took power and nationalized energy production. They started adopting the UNSUSTAINABLE green revolution. They are abandoning plentiful coal, shutting down coal mines. They already have 12-Hour blackouts, and their entire grid could collapse altogether. If it does, they will have significantly reduced their carbon footprint. I am sure all the looters that take advantage of this will be sure to use EVs in all their looting. Oh, my bad, they won’t be able to charge their EVs. Bicycle looting it is then.
Almost all electronics companies build in China. Apple contracts to Foxconn, and Foxconn builds in multiple countries for multiple companies. Companies like Samsung directly build and run factories in China, yet naive people don't complain about that and still buy Samsung products. For a while, Samsung was employing North Koreans in a Chinese factory that Samsung owned. Apple does not own any manufacturing in China, their only employees there are sales staff.
Apple has long built iPhones in other countries such as Brazil, Ireland, the USA and India; are those countries our enemies?
Investors fleeing China is a good thing for us - we’ve been nurturing and growing our enemy since the days of Nixon and Kissinger.
So Indian slave labor rather than Chicom slave labor? How Krishna of them.
Apple's shift into India is a smart move, even smarter is its shift out of China.
