A Lack of Machine Tools Is Holding Back Ammo Production, Army Says
Defense One ^ | 3/3/23 | Sam Skove

A lack of machine tools is constraining the United State's ability to ramp up ammunition transfers to Ukraine, the Army's top weapons buyer said March 3.

The timeline for acquiring new machine tools “are often the long poles in the tent on getting capacity increased,” said Douglas Bush, assistant Army secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology. “These machines are the size of buildings. You don’t just go buy it from a parking lot somewhere.”

U.S. and allied production of artillery ammunition has emerged as a key problem in supplying Ukraine, which burns through thousands of shells a day fighting Russia’s invasion. Ukraine may lose the war if it doesn’t receive enough supplies, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrel said Feb. 20.

Just another reason that not a single dime should be spent on Ukraine.

Just another reason that not a single dime should be spent on Ukraine.

Just another sign of the incompetence of our regime that has little to do with Ukraine.

Just what would we gain by feeding Ukraine to the Russian wolves? Besides a real war between NATO and Russia in a few years, that is. This is a real question for me because, besides the half dozen obviously Russian trolls on FR most days, I see lots of people saying what you said, but I just don't get it.

I am still incredulous at the lack of contingency planning, almost across the board.

That said, we DO have far more than enough HIMARS and could certainly send 60, maybe 80*, equip some with GLSDB’s that have 150 km range, 1 meter accuracy, and one version can hit moving targets. Go to work on Russian logistics...

Without ammo, Russia’s artillery advantage is no more.

*Scheduled receipts to US inventory are said to be ~96 in 2023, we should have had around 400 in stock, maybe a few more, as of 1/1/2023.

You don’t get it because you are a moron and lack America First values. There is zero benefit to any American by supporting this war. How has it improved your life? It is time to leave NATO and let Europe handle their own damn problems.

You obviously do not support Trump’s policies. That makes you a leftist piece of excrement.

“If you didn’t give so much away you wouldn’t be short all the time”

_____

Oh my! I’m laughing so hard, right now!

You see, I’m very short. About 5’10” tall. So my first thought was, “How rude”! “How did this person know I was so short? It has to be someone I know personally, but who?”

Then, I read your sentence again. LOL! It’s heck getting old where the brain misfires occasionally in such a manner.

TAKE it from the IRS, the FIBbers, the State Dept, the Post Office, and all the other worthless govey agencies that don’t, or shouldn’t, need it.

“Besides a real war between NATO and Russia in a few years, that is.”
If you have faced off against a bully and got your butt kicked, you know the answer.
You make sure they never want to fight with you again, EVER.
Revenge is a strong driver, but self interest is even stronger.
“From hell’s heart I stab at thee” only works in books, movies and in the minds of deranged men.
Ukraine will lose, but Russia will think carefully about attacking NATO even with out USA membership.
That is the goal.

A lack of machine tools is constraining the United State's ability to ramp up ammunition transfers to Ukraine,

Which means there is a lack of machine tool operators, too

Which means much of that skill and knowledge has disappeared from the USA

Shipping production overseas so Wall Street private equity can service a few more pennies of debt is really showing its long-term effects.

Our machine tools are over in China.

Why don’t we order ammunition from them?

Oh wait…

If things are bad now, just think about how bad they’d be if Biden should blunder us into a war with China and/or Russia.

Side note to Slow Joe: I grew up near a steel mill that rolled battleship and tank armor in WW II. Don’t count on this mill now. It’s gone, replaced by a dollar store that sells cheap Chinese crap.

The amount of personal derision in your post is a sign that you have no argument and cannot control your emotions any longer.

Even if Russia wins, it won't change a damn thing here. We have an unelected regime: they don't care what public opinion is because it doesn't matter. Perhaps you should focus on figuring out how to fix that.

Actually, Paul has summarized very succinctly. War is won, or lost, on logistics.

That sounds so…1930’s.

We went to Europe in 1917 after saying it didn’t matter. After millions had been killed.

Then we stayed away for 20 years, saying Europe didn’t matter.

Then we went back. Millions more died. Then stayed for 75 years…and there was relative peace.

Clearly the past has shown us that a stable Europe is in the interests of the US. Ukraine isn’t asking for our troops, they are asking for the tools we produced for EXACTLY this fight. These tools are coming out of inventory that has been sitting around for a long time.

I don’t need to see a few million killed in Europe to want todo something about it.

This concern from this post is that our industry lacks the ability to make the tools we need to make the arms we might need in the future. That should have everyone a little worried.
