Republican presidential hopefuls will line up on August 23 for the first round of primary debates. For conservatives who lived through the late 1970s and the 1980s, Ronald Reagan set a standard for how to behave as a candidate and then how to lead as a president.
What were the traits and accomplishments that made Reagan the model for many subsequent GOP candidates? For me, six come to mind. First, he could win elections. It may sound trite, but the first important test for any political candidate is the ability to win. It is even more important to win reelection, since that vote comes after constituents have seen what the candidate has accomplished, in addition to what he or she promises to do

You are correct. 1 of a kind.
We have no one of his stature who can be smooth, avuncular and brutally forceful at the same time.
But we do have a wartime candidate (which is what we have to have, since we’re at war).
Correct and well put.
You have called DeSantis Ronald Reagan for some time. Everytime I see Ronald, I see you compare him to Reagan. Probably true but I want DeSantis to not love illegals like Reagan and Reagan was an abortion lover especially as governor of California.
Thx
Yes, only one Reagan. I have been reminded from time to time that many of the attacks against Reagan are the same as those against Trump. The commonality is they are both populists and the elites hated them — and were dead wrong.
That’s true, but they still managed to persuade me that Reagan was too dangerous to vote for in 1980. I ended up voting for John Anderson. It was my first presidential election, and I was still naive about the MSM. Became a big fan of Reagan not long into his presidency. I have never forgotten the media’s dishonesty in that election, and they’ve only gotten worse in the decades since then.
Reagan was a candidate for a different era. Trump is the candidate for our present era.
I wouldn’t call Reagan an abortion lover as Governor. In the ‘60s, abortion would’ve been seen as a libertarian issue, or rather removing government from the equation. A la Goldwater. We know now it was terribly, terribly wrong, but I don’t think Reagan considered it would lead to tens of millions of abortions (but the “safe”, legal and “rare” schtick, which was never true).
β DeSwamptus is effectively at the GWB-2001 stage.β
Agree completely.
Ok I’m game.
Who is the most Reaganesque candidate ? That would be the one that supports:
-deindustrialization
-financialization
-Amnesty
-illegal immigrant benefits and no deportation
-ludicrous “propositional” citizenship
-globalist militarism
-NAFTA / “free trade”
-gun control
-hedge fund economics
It took me a long time before I was willing to face the ugly truth that Reagan and Thatcher were two of the most destructive post-war leaders.
The UK and USA without the industrial capacity to produce enough weapons, hopelessly in debt, and overrun with foreign immigrants goes directly back to them.
It’s no wonder that Blair and Obama praised Thatcher and Reagan, and claimed they built on their policies.
DeSantis ain’t no Reagan. Reagan served two honorable terms as Governor before running for POTUS. Reagan was also a people person and had a great personality.
NAFTA was passed under HW Bush. Reagan and Thatcher destroyed inflation. Defeated the Soviet Union.
I’ll have to disagree.
Lying comes so naturally to you.
Correct, it was a different time, however it would behoove Trump to study what Reagan did and how he did it. Take the best of Reagan and learn from it and use it - if the ego doesn’t get in the way.
Zero!
There was only one Reagan. There is only one Trump. There is only one Governor DeSantis.
Oh so Reagans first name isnβt Ronald? I find you dummer everyday.
You seriously contend that my saying "Ronald Herbert Walker DeSantis" is the same thing as saying "Ronald Reagan?"
Like I said, lying comes naturally to you.
PS - The proper spelling is "dumber"
