What has changed in this century is China becoming the senior partner to Russia in trying to wrest hegemony from the U.S. The Red Chinese control the Panama Canal, and leftist governments have arisen from Cuba to Brazil. In Africa, the Chinese have struck numerous trade deals with countries like Uganda and Guinea. The Russian Wagner Group has assisted African insurgents in toppling pro-French governments in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
Don’t worry, we can easily powerwash off the monuments, and plant new cherry trees. Repopulate it with decent normal Americans.

You are right. It’s about time we wake up.
And we have, thanks to Putin’s massive miscalculation when he decided to invade sovereign Ukraine - one of Americas allies. Now the Whole West is rearming itself, NATO is expanding with Sweden and Finland. All this would have been unthinkable(!) without Putin’s aggressiveness.
He has invaded parts of Georgia and Moldova too by the way... There is no end to Russia newfound love for imperialism.
You say USSR 2.0. I call them the Neo-Soviets. Which is about the same.
