Saint Nick

Bible in a Year :

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

Matthew 1:23 The person we know as Saint Nicholas (Saint Nick) was born around ad 270 to a wealthy Grecian family. Tragically, his parents died when he was a boy, and he lived with his uncle who loved him and taught him to follow God. When Nicholas was a young man, legend says that he heard of three sisters who didn’t have a dowry for marriage and would soon be destitute. Wanting to follow Jesus’ teaching about giving to those in need, he took his inheritance and gave each sister a bag of gold coins. Over the years, Nicholas gave the rest of his money away feeding the poor and caring for others. In the following centuries, Nicholas was honored for his lavish generosity, and he inspired the character we know as Santa Claus.

While the glitz and advertising of the season may threaten our celebrations, the gift-giving tradition connects to Nicholas. And his generosity was based on his devotion to Jesus. Nicholas knew that Christ enacted unimagined generosity, bringing the most profound gift: God. Jesus is “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). And He brought us the gift of life. In a world of death, He “save[s] his people from their sins” (v. 21).

When we believe in Jesus, sacrificial generosity unfolds. We tend to others’ needs, and we joyfully provide for them as God provides for us. This is Saint Nick’s story; but far more, this is God’s story. .

Reflect & Pray

What’s your experience with gift-giving—is it forced or free and joyful? How does Jesus’ life change your notions of generosity?

Dear God, I want to be generous, but I don’t always feel it. Please help me to practice true generosity.

A very pleasant good Wednesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Luvie for this morning's thread.

Well, it hasn't been a wonderful life at the house lately with the gas cutoff. I've been in a back and fourth with the gas company who claimed they never received the approval for the new line installed yesterday. The city clerk called them about it and let them know they did send the approval. They're now saying they'll have us hooked up 24-48 hours from approval which is by Thursday morning.

We will see if they do in fact come through but in case they don't I do have the BBB and the Corporation Commission on standby.

It has been wonderful life on the lake while all of this has been going on though. Needing a break from all of this nonsense. Here are some pics from Chisolm Trail Park:

As to the quiz well, I got 8 out of 15.

How's everyone doing this morning?

I wanted to get everything done before tomorrow so I could stay in. 40-something degrees isn’t TOO bad but with 20+ mph winds, nope. Want nothin’ to do with that.
It’ll warm back up Thursday, at least. Saturday will be in the mid 60s and they changed the rain forecast a little. The rain won’t be here until after sunset so any Christmas parades planned will be able to go on.

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Sorry to hear you’re having so much trouble getting your gas back on. They need to get on the ball!

At least you still have pretty weather for your outings with Gizmo.

Howdy, EGC! ((hugs)) That was a good score on the quiz. I'm sorry that the gas company is giving you the runaround about approval of the new line that THEY required. I hope they get things done sooner rather than later. Good thing you and Gizmo had fun in the sunshine today. Darn good thing you haven't had a blue norther up there. That would have been miserable!

Yeah, those winds will give you a wind chill which can really mess the day up. Are you going to some of the Christmas parades?

We had ours here already, but I didn’t go. I’m not into stuff like that any more. It was fun when we had a kid at home....or at least in the band.

Well thanks folks, I'm going to keep at it until I get satisfaction. They do require someone to be present when they turn the gas on so I will keep at it.

At least it hasn't been too cold lately. mid to upper 20's is as cold as we got so far.

No, I don’t plan to go. They have most of the parades late in the morning, though Tullahoma has theirs at night. It was last Friday and it was drizzling.
Winchester’s is this Saturday morning but I’ll pass.

The following Saturday is the one I hope is a nice, dry day. That’s Wreaths Across America day and it’s much better to do that in the dry. It rained the first year but we were out there anyway.

It really IS a wonderful program and I’m glad there’s someone close by who organizes to do it in the area. The cemetery is in a small town but it’s big. And old. And full of veterans. There are a few who fought in the Civil War, so it dates back. Even though there’s a good turnout of folks, it takes a while to lay all the wreaths and it’s so beautiful when we’re finished.

It sounds lovely and I know all the families who’ve survived appreciate it so much. That someone loves their loved one so much.

Many of the people who show up are family members. ALL the names are called out and as that’s done, the family members go up to get a wreath for their loved one’s graves. The rest of us put out the wreaths that remain.
