Be wary before scanning QR codes

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Using a QR code is becoming more common as a way to access information quickly on your phone.

You may have seen a Quick Response code, a group of black and white pixels usually in the shape of a square. Each one has an individualized pattern that encodes data that provides information about a product or service. They also allow users to view a menu at a restaurant, get directions, download an App, and confirm banking and other personal account information, along with dozens more uses.

As more people begin using them, thieves looking to steal your money and other information are creating harmful links embedded into the code.

Basically they are unknown URLs. It’s the equivalent of just randomly clicking on a link on a rando web site.

Woohoo! Let’s see what happens!

“I hate at some restaurants you have to scan to see a menu”

Me, too. Drives me crazy. I usually won’t go back.

It was all part of the stupid measures to prevent transmission of COVID. Did anybody ever ask “How many lives did QR Code menus save?”

We’ve got a nice, high-end restaurant that hands you a heavy tablet in a leather binder with an electronic menu. It’s full of beautiful videos of the food being served, flaming, or cut. But I’m old-fashioned. Even that is a PITA. How many times do you want to see a steak flambé video?

Just act like you don’t understand how to do it and they will bring you a menu.

He could also say you forgot your phone.

I request a paper menu. If they don’t have one, I’ll go elsewhere.

So glad I can’t afford s place like that. I absolutely abhor being forcefed marketing videos anywhere, anytime. Especially foodie nouvelle cuisine ones where half the stuff would make me vomit in real life. How would the restaurant and other diners like that outcome?

“He could also say you forgot your phone.”

That would be hard for me since I’m reading on the phone virtually 100% of the time in a restaurant (other than saying grace, of course).

My phone allows me to choose whether or not to allow QR traching. I don’t allow it. Shut it odd and tell them your phone doesn’t work with it.

Yesterday I went to the Walmart car care center to make an appointment for an oil change. The two ladies at the counter weren’t particularly busy. They asked me if I had an appointment, and I told them I came to make one. They said it would be a few minutes. Then, a few minutes later they told me I HAD to do it online, pointing me to a cardboard display with a giant QR code.

I asked them, “What if I don’t have a phone?” They had no answer. I told them I would take my business elsewhere. I don’t think they particularly cared.

Take out a black permanent marker and make a few short random dashes on the
Qr code.
Shuts it right down.
