“An experimental weapon, with experimental
ammunition…Let’s experiment.”
— British actor Alan Rickman,
Quigley Down Under, 1990.
At high noon on November 18, 2023, 58-year-old Vyacheslav Kovalskiy, a Ukrainian sniper assigned to the Sluzhba Bezpeky Ukrainy (Security Service of Ukraine, or SBU) Special Group “Alpha,” an elite, special operations, or SpetsNaz, unit, broke the existing world record for the longest confirmed sniper kill in history, at a mind-boggling 3,800 meters (2.36 miles!) near Kherson, Ukraine. The previous record was held by a Canadian JTF2 counterterrorist unit sniper in Iraq, at 3,540 meters (2.2 miles) in May 2017, with a McMillan TAC-50A1 (C15A1 in Canadian service) rifle.
The SBU press office announced on November 19, 2023, that, “The SBU sniper set a world record. He hit a Russian soldier (an officer) from an incredible distance. SBU snipers are changing the rules of world sniping, demonstrating the ability to work effectively at fantastic distances.” The SBU added that the shot had broken the previous world record by approximately 260 meters (just over 850 feet).
The massive, six-foot-long sniper rifle that achieved this significant milestone was the Ukrainian-made, MAYAK Volodar Obriyu (“Horizon’s Lord”), bolt-action, single-shot, anti-matériel rifle, chambered in 12.7x114mm HL (the HL stands for Horizon’s Lord, indicating a unique and proprietary cartridge). This brand-new (since 2021) weapon was specifically developed due to a “need for an anti-matériel and sniper weapon system that would have a longer effective range and flatter trajectories than the rifles chambered in .50 BMG (12.7x99mm NATO).”

Article has some holes in it and doesn’t explain what happened. If he shot him on the first shot it truly is luck, with some knowledge and skill. Rifle is touted as sub moa, so if 1/2 moa accuracy at that range is 21”. Also how do dope for wind that you don’t even know exists?
And I should believe this WHY??
This record will be beat in t to be near future. Possibly by AI.
Yeah, looked like a near miss and they went for cover. Might have been some spall from a hit off the structure to the right.
Long range harassment fire.
On thinking of it, the whole article doesn’t make sense. The video leads you to believe that it is the ‘scoped’ perspective but it just doesn’t look like it. And, with both dropping at the same time more explanation is needed. To get both with one shot, the bullet would have to have been coming from the left so I’m still thinking it was a miss and both dropped because of something other than one (or both) getting hit.
Yep, the reaction is exactly as you described it should be, except you werenâÂÂt looking at the target. So, there are 3 guys in the highlighted part of the video, the guy furthest to the right gets hit and the two guys to the left duck down once the bullet splashes in the targetâÂÂs chest, almost looked like a spray or mist. Definitely a hit.
I just donâÂÂt understand why you folks are so incline to discredit and disapprove of anything related to Ukraine. Sure, there is a lot of what many of us would consider âÂÂwasteâÂÂ, but what percent of that is relative to say, US government waste, because I would probably say 93% of US government and spending is a complete waste. At least for Ukrainians they get something very much needed and valued, and for the most part, put it to extremely good use. And as far as the bulk of real military aid, you would really have to be a fool to think the majority of that is a waste. The himar rockets, patriot missiles, artillery shell charges and powder, and etc⦠bedsides that fact that it is protecting Ukrainian citizens, all that has a shelf life, the US tax payer has to pay to dispose of all that stuff and then pay to replace it, so the himar rockets from the 90s and all the like that Ukraine gets, are not missed at all. Ukraine doesnâÂÂt get anything new, just old nearly expired stock, that is why a lot of it is sourced from other allied nations. There are a hundred other really wasteful spending that not only has a net loss to the tax payer but also a more pressing negative impact in American society.
If you’ll thumb back through the pages of Free Republic, I’d bet you’ll find mention of this back when the story first broke ... six weeks ago.
Mark and Sam videos are great, no BS just well thought out approaches.
I suspect they were already under fire, and were taking cover just before the “sniper” shot hit the building.
