World-Record Sniper Kill in Ukraine
Gunpowder Magazine ^ | December 20, 2023 | Warren Gray

“An experimental weapon, with experimental

ammunition…Let’s experiment.”

— British actor Alan Rickman,

Quigley Down Under, 1990.

At high noon on November 18, 2023, 58-year-old Vyacheslav Kovalskiy, a Ukrainian sniper assigned to the Sluzhba Bezpeky Ukrainy (Security Service of Ukraine, or SBU) Special Group “Alpha,” an elite, special operations, or SpetsNaz, unit, broke the existing world record for the longest confirmed sniper kill in history, at a mind-boggling 3,800 meters (2.36 miles!) near Kherson, Ukraine. The previous record was held by a Canadian JTF2 counterterrorist unit sniper in Iraq, at 3,540 meters (2.2 miles) in May 2017, with a McMillan TAC-50A1 (C15A1 in Canadian service) rifle.

The SBU press office announced on November 19, 2023, that, “The SBU sniper set a world record. He hit a Russian soldier (an officer) from an incredible distance. SBU snipers are changing the rules of world sniping, demonstrating the ability to work effectively at fantastic distances.” The SBU added that the shot had broken the previous world record by approximately 260 meters (just over 850 feet).

The massive, six-foot-long sniper rifle that achieved this significant milestone was the Ukrainian-made, MAYAK Volodar Obriyu (“Horizon’s Lord”), bolt-action, single-shot, anti-matériel rifle, chambered in 12.7x114mm HL (the HL stands for Horizon’s Lord, indicating a unique and proprietary cartridge). This brand-new (since 2021) weapon was specifically developed due to a “need for an anti-matériel and sniper weapon system that would have a longer effective range and flatter trajectories than the rifles chambered in .50 BMG (12.7x99mm NATO).”

What sort of optics can see the target at that range?

They probably can’t. Ukraine is known for Ghost of Kiev type bragging.

Sounds like they used 50 BMG as the parent cartridge and lengthened the case. Just like the .38/.357 magnum.

I killed someone with no significant tactical or military objective, I must be a hero.

You people need to wake up and stop supporting this Ukraine grit ...wasting tax payer money for Military industrial complex(this is part of their propaganda to suck people in)

This war will end with a negotiated settlement and could have been avoided with same settlement at start ...but the grift must happen because of corrupt and degenerate leaders who are truly deluded.

Pretty impressive. The bullet traveled 9 seconds, amazing luck the target stayed still that long! Here’s a picture of the gun.

. A few hundred? Good German glass, like Zeiss, Steiner, ZCO - will set you back 3- $4000. And I don’t know that even this could site in a target 3500 meters away.

The longer the shot, the more luck plays in it. That is what makes it fun.

I see two people go down at the same time. Also see two moving after they are down. My first thought without doing the math is that it was unsuppressed and both heard the sound and dropped. Had it been one getting hit, the other would have delayed in his reaction just enough to be noticeable. Also can’t see any huge misting effects but the video is very blurry. I wouldn’t call it a ‘kill’.....but rather a hit.

I have looked downrange through MANY different ‘rifle scopes’.

Never seen any that could ID a human target AND hit it at 2.5 miles.

Consider the Abrams M1-A2 has a maximum effective range of ~3000 meters. The best in the world. So ... Ukraine has a ‘rifle’ and optics system that can range out nearly as far?

Color me skeptical.
