DeSantis threatens to use ‘veto pen’ if Florida lawmakers pass measure to use taxpayer money for Trump’s legal bills

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis let it be known Monday that he won’t support legislation in the Sunshine State that would put taxpayers on the hook for former President Donald Trump’s legal bills.

In response to a Politico report noting that “some Florida Republicans” are backing a measure that could grant as much as $5 million to the 77-year-old GOP presidential primary front-runner, DeSantis tweeted: “But not the Florida Republican who wields the veto pen…”

The proposal, filed by state Sen. Ileana Garcia (R-Miami), would set aside state funds for legal fees incurred as a result of criminal charges brought by a “US public entity” on “qualified persons” who have been “subject to political discrimination.”

Trump isn’t named in the bill text, but to qualify for the money, individuals must meet “presidential eligibility requirements” and be Florida residents – both criteria that Trump meets.

Sounds like DeSantis couldn’t take it anymore and thus his endorsement of Trump lasted less than 24 hours.

I suspect that is a RECORD short time for a major endorsement to last.

On a side note, the RNC paid millions for DJT legal bills until he became a 2024 candidate. At that point, the RNC halted payments through the primary season to maintain neutrality among the candidates.

Don't know when the "primary season" ends, allowing Trump to receive RNC funds again to pay his legal bills. Is it when Trump is the last candidate standing, or when the RNC convention nominates him?

RNC warning to Trump: If you run for president, we stop paying your legal bills, says official

He’s being childish. Talk about not wanting to get back into the good graces of MAGA and Trump. His objection should have been private.

This guy is too dumb to ever be president, he’s a small little man without an ounce of strategic ability.

I don’t like it when politicians put their hands in our pockets, even politicians I support. Anyone who wants to help Trump pay his legal bills is free to do so with their own money, and I intend to do so.

DeSantis didn’t feel the need to veto a bill removing the “resign-to-run” requirement for people seeking to run for president or vice president just before he announced his failed presidential bid.

It was just a coincidence that he personally benefited from signing that bill into law. /s

When those legal fees only exist because the person is fighting for the American people, then YES.

How about when desantis directs $92 million to make changes to a highway that increases the value and access to a housing developer?

The Florida Department of Transportation directed the money to fund a highway interchange backed by developer Mori Hosseini, who is building 1,300-some homes and an outdoor shopping mall on land abutting the planned interchange.

The interstate project includes several partial access roads onto Hosseini’s property, plans that were not included in the initial design for the “Woodhaven” development, according to the Post, which noted other developments will also benefit from the new exits.

Of course for you desantis supporters, this is perfectly fine....

Pass it anyway and let Ronny veto it. Then pass it over his veto.

So you’re a New York Metropolitan Area conservative willingly living under the thumb of Kathy Hochul, and you have no problem first-naming our Florida governor, and letting us know just how much you disapprove of his juvenility? A belated welcome to Free Republic.

Do you or do you not think the taxpayers should pay politicians’ legal fees?

Do you or do you not think taxpayers should pay for one political party to persecute the opposition party?

Given the state of the RNC’s finances, I doubt they will have enough cash on hand to cover the cost of Alina Habba’s stylist
