PITTSBURGH — Starting Monday, the city of Pittsburgh says it will no longer respond to 911 calls that are not related to "in progress emergencies."
According to a press release titled "Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Makes Operational Changes to Better Serve Pittsburgh," the city will create a "Telephone Reporting Unit" (TRU) to dispatch calls that do not require an in-person response by officers.
"TRU will NOT be assigned to any 'In Progress' call where a suspect may be on scene, any crime where a person may need medical aid, any domestic dispute, calls with evidence, or where the Mobile Crime Unit will be requested to process a scene," the press release said.
According to an investigation by the Pittsburgh-based station WPXI, this means that calls related to crimes such as criminal mischief, theft, harassment and burglary alarms will all be handled by the TRU or other forms of online reporting.
According to WPXI, Pittsburgh Police Chief Larry Scirotto says it's part of an effort to cut down his department's call volume from 200,000 to 50,000 calls per year.
The changes come as the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police personnel prepare to transition from working five eight-hour days to four 10-hour days each week. The schedule change is also effective Monday and designed to enhance officer wellness, according to Scirotto.
That's a 75% cut in responding to emergency calls.
Redefining crime.
any citizen without means of defending his/herself, any family, or home... is nuts
Memphis criminal courts are hearing only 20% of the criminal cases they normally hear in any year, while crime has risen 250%. Of course the courts say they need more money. Imagine coming to work and telling your employer you will only do 20% of your job, and that to do anything more requires them to pay you more!!??

Ah Pittsburgh, my home town.
There, fixed...
If you want ten cops with guns on your property RIGHT NOW, all you have to do is report someone is misgendering you.
Time to move...
"The Door Dash driver forgot my taco sauce with my Taco Bell order!"
Notice that the Pittsburgh police will no longer respond to theft calls. Then why not shoplift to your heart’s content? The key is to be quick. In and out, fast.
If you’re not on scene, evidently the police will not respond.
In a way, I can’t blame Pittsburgh. This new style of policing works well in California. Why not try it elsewhere? 😒
Sounds like the same system Los Angeles uses. Good luck getting police to respond. Thin Blue Line, huge area to cover, under policed - that and DA George Gascon will toss the case out.
I live in a conservative exurb with its own, very responsive police force - why housing prices have skyrocketed.

Coming to a big city near us all... soon.
Interesting. They’ve gone from a response agency to one who only ‘documents’ adverse events. And, my guess is that is only to be able to respond to the federal government’s insane desire for data and statistics so it can keep receiving whatever federal influence money it already gets.
A 75% reduction in crime with the snap of a finger
I remember cops refusing to go to calls in certain parts of cities sixty years ago.
“Just N—— cutting up!” was the excuse. Life or Look had a great article on this in the 1960s.
Letting the OD druggies die couldn’t hurt.
Helps weed out undesirables from the population.
“Redefining crime”

And recalibrating the crime statistics.
What if the citizen has ended the in progress emergency and the bad guy’s spirit has left the scene? Would you need to call the rubbish removal department and all’s good?

Response should be: “Pittsburgh Taxpayers Stop Responding to Certain Tax Bills.”
