I’ve always seen people supposedly with the “gift of tongues” to be somewhat silly. If it was truly a gift the babbling would equate to some language from somewhere that somebody understood. Like in the book of Acts.

No one is supposed to pray in tongues unless there is someone to interpret.
Also, the only tongues Acts showed were ever used were legitimate languages.

They have no idea what praying in tongues means. it’s not gibberish.
I grew up in Assembly of God, Four Square, and similar evangelical churches where speaking in tongues was fairly common. That was particularly true among the elder members. None of it ever made sense, and to my young ears it all sounded like some repetition of nonsensical syllables.
It’s considered akin to snake handling among even most evangelicals these days.

I’m pretty sure that some of the posts on this thread are tantamount to blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. One should be very careful about that — especially if otherwise well-informed in the scriptures. Such people should know better.
