Sep 11, 2001, the SECOND bloodiest day in America (Behind the Battle of Antietam, 1863, 25k+ killed)
Fox News ^ | 11 SEP 01 - the SECOND bloodiest day in America | dcbryan1

Fox News was just on live with NYC official, and they expect 10k+ in fatalities.

This exceeds the bloodiest day in American History, the Battle of Antietam in 1863 during the American Civil War in which there were over 25,000 killed and three times as many wounded.

I think the D-Day invasion and Pearl Harbor, Tarawa, and Iwo Jima top off the next deadliest days in America...

This is a horrible day in America...but as always, we will prevail.

Some did get out. I would be thinking on the order of 10 - 25k. That Antietam figure may be threatened. I hope not!

They've not even started counting yet. Each building held over 20,000. Brace yourselves.

The buildings did hold at least 50,000 people. But they were able to evacuate for thirty minutes or so, I believe. Look, it isn't going to be good whatever the figure, but I'm hoping it isn't anywhere near what it would have been if they had gone down immediately after the plane strikes.

Each building could hold up to 25 000, but since it was 18 minutes between events, I would hope that all of the people in the second tower and most on the lower floors of the first tower evacuated.

Even without elevators, the majority had time to get down and away.

I believe there were 25,000 casulties, (killed, wounded and missing) not 25,000 killed at Antietam.

The NY TIMES has reported that the evacuation of the WTC did not begin until the second plane slamed into the WTC.

Don't forget the first days of the Battle of the Bulge, starting Dec. 16th, 1945.

As you point out, they had about a half hour to evacuate. A while ago on FNC they spoke with a man that was on the 75th floor (I think) and he said it took him about 25 minutes to go down the stairs and get out. He said that he was a big guy so he took his time, because he didn't want to have a heart attack trying to get out. He said that lots of people passed him as he took time to rest.

So, hopefully many people were able to get out before the collapse.

I was talking to someone in tower 2 when they got the word to evacuate. It certainly seemed to me that they started to evacuate before the 2 plane hit.

I heard that too. I think that the final casualty figure will be between 6,000 and 8,000.
