Sources tell TIME that U.S. officials suspect that bin Laden conspirators may have been planning to disperse biological or chemical agents from cropdusting planes

Saturday, Sep. 22, 2001

New York -- U.S. law enforcement officials have found a manual on the operation of cropdusting equipment while searching suspected terrorist hideouts, government sources tell TIME magazine in an issue out on Monday, Sept. 24th.

The discovery has added to concerns among government counterterrorism experts that the bin Laden conspirators may have been planning — or may still be planning —to disperse biological or chemical agents from a cropdusting plane normally used for agricultural purposes.

Among the belongings of suspected terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui, sources tell TIME, were manuals showing how to operate cropdusting equipment that could be used to spray fast-killing toxins into the air.

The discovery resulted in the grounding of all cropdusters nationwide on Sunday Sept. 16th. The dusters have been allowed back up, but are not allowed to take off or land from what traffic controllers refer to as Class B airspace, or the skies around major cities.

One senior official cautions that because corroborative evidence is lacking the FBI does not place "high credibility" in the notion that the hijackers were in fact exploring the idea of stealing or renting cropdusters. However, the FBI is advising members of a crop-dusters' group to report any suspicious buys of dangerous chemicals in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks.

Last week, the National Agricultural Aviation Association, a crop dusters trade group, posted a message from the FBI to its membership: "Members should be vigilant to any suspicious activity relative to the use, training in or acquisition of dangerous chemicals or airborne application of same including threats, unusual purchases, suspicious behavior by employees or customers, and unusual contacts with the public. Members should report any suspicious circumstances or information to local FBI offices."

Actually this type of attack is something Yousef wanted to implement before his capture for bombing the WTC back in 1993.

On page 87 of THE NEW JACKALS: Ramzi Yousef, Osama Bin Laden & The Future of Terrorism by simon Reeve (Published in 1999 by Northeastern University Press), Yousef was plotting to have another terrorist (who was a commercial pilot) fly a light aircraft loaded with chemical weapons and "either fly it - kamikaze-style - into the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, or to fly overhead and spay the whole area with gas." Yousef got captured, but there are many Islamic terrorists happy to take his place.

FYI: Unfortunately, Yousef's got to watch his dream of blowing up the WTC finally come true on television in a cozy cell in Colorado. Lets hope bin Laden et al are blown to Timbuktu instead of being captured and having high paid lawyers and appeals here in the US making an mockery of our legal system.

P.S. IIRC I saw where something like 50% of the Moslems in this country think that Osama bin Laden is a "Good Moslem." If this is anywhere near true, BRRRRRR!!!

How about a "proprietary front company" owned by jihadists, such as a gasoline wholesale distributer with twenty tanker trucks?

sort of like this:

"FBI agents raided a residence in Detroit on Monday looking for Al-Marabh, one of the nearly 200 witnesses being sought in the investigation. Instead, they found the three men and a cache of documents. The three were charged with having false immigration papers". ....

.... "All four men hold chauffeur's licenses in Michigan, according to Secretary of State records. Koubriti and Al-Marabh also hold commercial driving license endorsements allowing them to drive trucks and other large vehicles."

"Al-Marabh also was authorized to transport hazardous materials, state records show." ....

"I think all Middle East nationals should be watched, wiretapped, and even deported."

Adolph, get a grip.

Don't forget that the best way to develop bio-warfare capabilities is right here in a good ole US-of-A college microbiology lab, and don't forget that all these terrorists have been students so far.

Do you then suggest we just wait for each new mega murder, then send the FBI around with notepads to get doors slammed in their faces again?

What will it take to get you pissed off? Fifty thousand dead? A half million?

With the tracks again leading straight through the "moderate" moslem community?

When will the "moderate" moslem clerics put out a Fatwa on Osama Bin Laden, as Osama has put out on ALL Americans, military and civilian, using the koran's surya 9-5 as the justifcation from allah for mass killing?

I think we can distinguish between arab-Americans and those who are here on a visa.

Obviously. Most Arab-Americans who really are 3rd of 4th generation are not Muslims at all, they are mistaken for Greeks-Americans quite often. The Muslim Arab nationals have an entirely different appearance.

Ho-hum...we'll just nuke 'em.

Huh? Nuke 'em where? Do you plan on using nukes on crop dusters in the US? Rather simplistic approach that achieves nothing. Nuke Afghanistan and leave the crop dusters loaded up with biologicals here in the US? Nukes might be used to take out Bin Laden, but they certainly won't do much good for those of us back here in the US with terrorists living among us ready to attack.

Yeah I am very familiar with that having lived in San Diego that story certainly caught my attention. But it doesn't surprise me at all - Hell, half of the campus there has more anti-America rhetoric than the terrorist networks of the Middle East.

But I also have made countless Muslim and Arab friends throughout the years who despise the Taliban and root on the Northern Alliance and have no problems with innocent civilians dying in an attack on Afghanistan by the U.S. because they believe that what has happened to that nation is horrible given the Taliban rise to power and their getting in bed with Osama Bin Laden with a "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine."

Others have told me of how miserable they feel that Hesbollah and Hamas have set back progress in the Middle East and have given Islam the face of hatred and death in their zealous efforts to turn the Arab community in the Middle East and South Asia against the West.

When Americans respond with some of the talk I've read here today it hands a victory to Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hesbollah and the militant Palestinian factions. Because then they can point to such language and say "see we told you the West is Satan - look what they want to do to you. Look what they think of you."

It's exactly what Hitler tried to do with Jews - wage a propaganda campaign laced with lies, fueled by resentment and he almost got away with it.

"or any type of mechanism that facilitates chemical or bio-warfare?"

Such as aerosol cans?

The use of biological/chemical weapons by terrorists is certainly believable. Cheaper and easier to use than any other method of mass destruction, it is a wonder that terrorists have not made major use of such weapons. The most likely reason they have not, is fear of the most severe retatliation.

I just hope it's you that gets dusted when it happens. Back in WWII it wasn't the policy to try to distinguish good Nazis from bad Nazis, we didn't give any the run of the US.

The FAA has an active NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) out prohibiting flight within 3 nautical miles (bigger than a statute mile) from ANY outdoor gathering, including professional, college or high school events. It goes on to say that any pilot ought to be in contact with ATC to keep them away from these sites. You will not be seeing blimps or banner-tow planes over stadiums for a long time.

Ummm you suggest that you don't know the difference between a German and a Nazi. We didn't round up Germans or German descendents and put them in camps (thank goodness) like we did to some extent with Japanese.

After we "tolerate" a bio attack with vast caualties, Americans will lose much of their tolerance.

This enemy attacks by hiding camouflaged among the community.

So I guess we must just wait for each mega murder, in order to not be called (heaven forbid!) intolerant.
