As an ex-squid all I know is, if my ass was on the line.
I'd rather see the USMC come charging over the hill!!!

"Fighting ourselves will not bring us victory."

Back off!
We're not fighting ourselves.
We Gyrenes are just bragging a little; we've earned the right to do that!
Competition between the services is natural and promotes the feeling of comradery that is so necessary for the effectiveness of all the services.

I guess, since the comment wasn't meant for you, the irony went right over your head, as it must have for the original recipient.

Finally, tell me, who can drop 10,000 troops in 48 hours any where in the world, ONLY THE US ARMY (with a little help from our friends at the Air force).

Hackworth is rapidly REALLY earning the nickname of "Hack". Not only is he full of Hillary about the Marines being first in VN (the Army only beat them by either 4 or 6 YEARS,depending on how you count it),but notice how he stays strangly silent about the Ranger Batallions and the 10th Mountain Division. Why doesn't he criticize the AF for not having ships,or the Marines for not having airborne troops? As far as that goes, why doesn't he bitch about not being able to get orange juice out of apples?

Uhhh - "the guy who wrote this" is one of the most-decorated living retired Army soldiers around.

He is also one who put himself in for most of his medals, and who STILL allows himself to be introduced as "the most decorated living American soldier, despite KNOWING this is NOT true. He was also forced to remove from his published list of awards and decorations several which he did NOT earn. One being the "Ranger" tab.

Fought in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam,

He did NOT fight in WW-2,although he does try to give that impression. He joined while the war was going on,but it was over before he ever left the US.

He is the MOST decorated living veteran, a retired US Army colonel.

No,he is NOT. He's not even close. That title and honor belongs to LTC Robert Howard (ret),US Army. In fact,LTC Howard has more valor decorations that BOTH Audie Murphy AND Sgt Alvin York.Combined. ALL valor awards earned as a enlisted man,and he didn't put himself in for a single one. He was put in for a Medal of Honor on 3 seperate occasions before he finally got it. He got his battlefield commission as a Cpt after he got the MOH. Hackworth knows all this, and even knows who LTC Howard is. Yet he still allows himself to be introduced that way without correction. Hackworth has PLENTY to be proud of on his own,and should be ashamed of himself for allowing this to continue.

The book 'Citadel' by Dale A. Dye has those 'code of the grunt' quotes.

That was written by a officer,so you should have expected it to be wrong. How it really goes is "Never run if you can walk. Never walk if you can ride. Never stand when you can sit,and never sit when you can lay down.Never be awake when you can be sleeping, and never go hungry when you can be eating. The army will provide you with all the discomfort you will need in life."

Another one from his book;

Code of the Grunt
Don't expect anything because you aren't going to get it. The only ration that won't be short is a ration of $hit. Like the buttplate of a rifle, you are fairly insignificant and will get banged around at every turn.

The USMC are shock troops. The Army is for stand up slug it out battles against a like force. They don`t train the same nor should one be used in place of the other. The Army does special troops like the 10th Mountain Div. they use as shock troops. The 10th is in theatre now.

This article contradicts itself. Hack says the Army is too heavy becuase we need to move by ship...well tell me how did thd USMC get there...BY SHIP!

I agree, I love to read Hack, and I agree with his premis that the Army needs to dump Clinton's PC influence and get back the warrior spirit.

But He is trying to hard in this article. The first regular unit deployed came from the Army's 10th Mountain Division.

That part about WW2 bothered me. No disrespect to the USMC, but island warfare should be their speciality. It would be shocking if they didn't take the lead in pacific theater. Just like the Army's Mountain Division should excell in Afghanistan, because they are specifically trained for that enviroment.
