Freeper Suggestions on Where to Retire

I am looking for suggestions from FReepers in lower 48 for city/state recommendations on where to retire.

I have pretty much decided on the western US (excluding the Pacific Coast states) and would lean to the southwestern states. I would stay in Alaska but I am tired of the long winter nights.

Would prefer acreage but you can try to convince me to live in town. :-)

If you know of any on-line newspaper links that have the classified, a URL would be appreciated.

Reconsider. Augusta GA is a well-kept secret. Nice town, low cost of living. Check out other areas of GA SC and NC as well.

I highly recommend Arizona. Low taxes. Low cost of living. In general a western attitude about being independent (somewhat spoiled by the people who have moved in from socialist republics). Pick your climate, starting with incredible sun and low humidity in the desert valley of Phoenix to the snow and cold of the high country around Flagstaff. If you live on the edge of Phoenix it is cooler. Outside of Phoenix land costs are much lower. It depends on what you like. Great airport. Spectacular scenery. Mayo Clinic and other good hospitals.

Phoenix is a high-tech, prosperous, growing city. I love it here. It would take a SWAT team to get me to move.

Check out Grand Lake, Colorado. You get the snow in the winter, the blooming plants in the spring, the colors in the fall and mild warm weather in the summer. Hahahahah!!! I have actually looked at property in Las Cruces and near Alamogordo. Might still move to God's Country (Land of Enchanment) - that's why I asked for opinions - to help me off the fence.

I lived in Alamogordo for 5 years...kinda liked it, especially the 340 days of sun a year and BBQing the Thanksgiving Turkey in my swimsuit!

You're right, I'd hate it in ABQ :-)

You are welcome in Arkansas, we need you. Northwest is a nice area.

Land and homes are cheap, taxes are low. You can live in the mountains on a lake but are within a reasonable distance of Tulsa, Springfield, MO and a daylight distance of Dallas, OKC, Memphis, KC, or STL. Beaches in the Florida panhandle or GulfShores are a reasonable distance for long weekends if you decide you need the ocean. Fishing and hunting are good. People are friendly. And did I mention that land and homes are cheap.

Lake Tahoe or Reno, Nevada. I lived in Winnemucca NV for 8 years and would recommend there as well.

Another good suggestion...I have been looking at Winnemucca too and I'm at the Reno Air Races every year, might at well live there and save the flight/drive.

there is a web site I use frequently to see what's cooking where my kids live...but this would be excellent for you...it's called.. thousands of newspapers on the net......check it out....BTW, I would vote for Colorado in a heartbeat.

Agree. I used to live in Northern Ark. it's beautiful. Except, for the little matter of tornadoes.
