"The kid's name is Sinatra. He considers himself the greatest vocalist in the business. No one's ever heard of him. He looks like a wet rag. But he says he's the greatest."
- Harry James, c. 1937
Yes Harry, he was and always will be the greatest. His was the music of the 20th Century, and when he died on May 14th, 1998, the century truly ended. Hoboken, New Jersey's most famous son, born December 12th, 1915 will always be a part of America's musical history, and will be in the hearts of those who were touched by his music.
He was 62 when I was born, and I was 21 when he left us. Not a likely candidate to become so rabid a fan, but I am glad it happened. Life is better for it, there's no soundtrack to accompany the ups and downs and events of your life quite like Frank Sinatra.
"I would like to be remembered as a man who had a wonderful time living life, a man who had good friends, fine family - and I don't think I could ask for anything more than that, actually."
Frank with the gal that got away, Ava Gardner
"I'm supposed to have a Ph.D. on the subject of women. But the truth is I've flunked more often than not. I'm very fond of women; I admire them. But, like all men, I don't understand them."
"I'm for anything that gets you through the night, be it prayer, tranquilizers, or a bottle of Jack Daniel's."
"May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine."
"We ain't actually figured out ourselves what we do up here, but it's fun, baby", at the Sands in Las Vegas - January 1960
"I'm not one of those complicated, mixed-up cats. I'm not lookin' for the secret to life or the answer to life. I just go on from day to day, takin' what comes."
"Once you're a friend, you're a friend for life" Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop

Ah, the Chairman, long may he wave! It's still Sinatra's world and we're all just living in it. While I'm at it, how bout your picks for his best albums? Here's mine:
1) "A Swingin' Affair"-The Chairman in all his glory
2)"Come Dance With Me"-More swingin' brilliance
3)"Sinatra at the Sands"-Live at the peak of the Rat Pack days, and dig the monologues.
4)"Songs for Swingin' Lovers"-This album represents Sinatra in his greatest years, Nelson Riddle arrangements and The Voice at its peak
5)"Sinatra Christmas Album"-For my money, the best Christmas album ever

What a touching and wonderful tribute. I am listening to my favorite song of his, even as I write this: Summer Wind.

I'm usually not a big fan of much of the older music(think most of it is too sappy), but Sinatra was one of the all time greats.
And I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted to be on the receiving end of his punches.

The week that Sinatra died, Clinton was in some deep, hot water, I can't remember what it was. I said to my husband, "The only thing that would knock this off the front page would be Sinatra Dying." I swear this is true. It was that week I decided that Clinton was truly the devil.

I really dig the big band arrangements but Frank could take lyrics and make them come alive! "Come fly with me" and "Summer Wind" are two more of my favorites.
