Intrusive Questionnaire Covertly Given To 13-Year-Old Daughter by Pediatrician

Read the questionnaire

When Diane Neeley took her 13-year-old daughter Amanda for a check-up at Pediatric Health Care Associates in Peabody recently, she became angry when the nurse covertly gave the girl an intrusive questionnaire.

It was the first time they had gone to that doctor who was listed in the health care directory of their provider, SIGNA PPO.

"My daughter was sickened and felt horribly violated to being asked such questions," she says. The daughter told her, "These are not things that you ask people like me. I'm only 13 years old, for heaven's sake."

Neely told the pediatrician how offended she was and that she did not appreciate the office giving anything to her daughter behind her back.

The doctor replied, according to Neely, state law requires that all children are treated as if they are promiscuous and doctors have every right to offer sexual advice, birth control, etc. without parental permission.

Neely says, "I am so sickened. My daughter is a sweet, innocent girl who believes in God and never even dreamed of the horrible things she was asked."

She said her daughter has attended a Christian school in New Hampshire since fifth grade.

The form asks for information about guns in the home, fighting in the home, friends' behavior, sex and drug activity, etc.

Nev Moore from the parents' rights group, Justice for Families, tells MassNews, "This questionnaire is not only invasive, it is deliberately designed to undermine parental authority and decision-making, without the parents even being aware of it. In addition, it is a sneaky device used to manipulate children to unwittingly disclose information about their homes and parents that can then be distorted and used to open the door for the state to enter our homes and lives and take control of them."

Not State Law

MassNews was interested in finding out what state law mandates an intrusive questionnaire to a young girl at the doctor's office without her parent's knowledge. We also wanted to know what the relevance some of the questions were to a check-up, and whether DSS was behind this form in any way.

The pediatrician, Dr. Miriam Dunau, did not return repeated calls from MassNews seeking comment. MassNews even visited her office, but she would not come out to discuss the matter. The receptionist gave the reporter the name and contact number for "Neal Stephany," the supervisor located at another office. Pediatric Health Care Associates has 6 offices in the area. Stephany would not return calls either. The head of nursing, Ann Costa, also did not return calls.

MassNews called the Mass. Board of Registration in Medicine, which regulates doctors, to find out if there is a requirement to interrogate children with an intrusive questionnaire.

Spokesperson Claudette Houle told MassNews the Board of Registration does not have any regulation associated with teen questionnaires.

According to Neeley, Dr. Dunau later called her and said it was inappropriate to send a reporter to "harass" her and turn the incident into a big circus.

Neeley answered that it was inappropriate for the doctor to give an intrusive questionnaire to her daughter behind her back.

According to Neeley, the doctor then told her she must have misunderstood about the form or else Dunau didn't explain it right during their argument that day. The questionnaire, she said, was a clinic form and not required by state law. She said the law does permit them to ask about and dispense contraceptives, and if she objects to the questions on the form, she has the right to go elsewhere.

"She changed her story," said Neeley, who is considering filing a complaint with the Board of Registration in Medicine. "All of a sudden there is no state law." She said she not only objects to the questions, but at the very top of the form they go behind her back.

Neeley says, "Now my eyes are open." She hopes other parents will also be on the lookout for snooping by their doctors.

#25 Do you wear a helmet during outdoor activities?

Oh my god...I nearly died...muhahahah. Unreal. I can see it now...new codes will force us to make buildings out of foam, no one will be allowed to go outside without a helmet. Children must wear a helmet at all times as well as ballistic mittens....they will take all of our forks and knives and issue government approved rubber spoons....Utopia is just around the corner...

LOL

It was so weird. I wouldn't even write what these questions asked, but I told him that I didn't understand what this had to do with my stomach ache. He implied that many women have ailments that are caused by sexual frustration!

That is spooky! I think this guy was cruising for a piece of your ass. What a goof!

Last August I took my then 12 year old grandson to the doctor for a shot that is required before starting Jr High School. I went in the room with him just because of this crap. The nurse started hinting around about his home life (his mom & dad both work) and I said we were there for his shot in my best A hole voice. Shot given, no more questions.

As disturbing as this questionaire is, I am more concerned as to where the information is sent and studied once it is collected. Does anyone know if this question was ever asked of this wonderful healer?

I think it depends on how the kid answers question #21 on the list.

The questionairre we got in Michigan last fall was worse. Besides the same kind of questions as on yours, it asked if she had ever had a homosexual experience or desires or if any of her friends had. Also asked if her friends have had sex or not. Asked if she masturbated or not. Outrage!

This sounds so familiar. A few years ago a (Massachusetts) pediatrician tried to pull something like this with my 13 year old daughter. Also covertly told her that any time she wanted birth control pills she could have them without my knowledge or approval. My daughter informed me 5 minutes after we got in the car. (She didn't tell me immediately because she knew I would have inflicted damage on the woman.) She also told my daughter that marijuana probably wouldn't hurt her asthma. Yes, I did complain. No, I did not go back. I don't know what it is about these docs! Guess they think they know better than everybody else.

Wow! "Neo-Puritanical Liberalism." You really sum up the nature of the modern left in a most descriptive way. You mind if I use that?

I've thought for a long time, that the politically correct, eviro-socialists were really acting out of quasi religious motivations. Especially these bubble-brained 20 somethings that are "into saving the environment". People need to feel like they are part of something larger than themselves and since religion is now "dumb", "working to protect the environment" and for "Social Justice" have taken their place. The amazing thing is that they think they are the tolarant ones. Sheesh!

Are you sure?

Just how clearly do you speak/listen to your child?

I have no wish to heighten paranoia, but it happens throughout this country.Your state is not immune.

I challenge all other healthcare workers in all positions and from all professions to take the JR challenge.

If you ever see this type of form at the place you work, THROW THEM AWAY. If they keep an original to make copies from, find it and throw it away. If it's on a computer file, delete it. We all know what a headache it is sometimes in healthcare facilities getting new forms ordered and shipped in. Make it too difficult where you work and maybe they'll quit using them.

"They" have no business asking kids things like this; it's our duty to stop it. It's none of their business.

There is also a questionnaire to ask the doctor, if they ask you about guns: "When was your last firearms training," etc. that put them on the spot, if they were just anti-gun but questioning patients. But I can't find it right now. Anyone else have it handy? I think the SAS put it out.

"I know -- next time around, have your own set of questions for the M.D. and his nurse asking them about their own sexual life experiences, sexual preference, experimentation with drugs, alcohol intake, etc., etc., etc. You can't be too picky about your child's doctor. Oh yes -- do they have a gun in the house?"

LOL.....I think this is the best idea....you don't want a doctor with AIDS or HEP touching/probing your child......LOL

All this crap is endorsed by the American Pediatric Association. I know I'm a physician and I've read about it. I would never ask these questions unless there was some real good reason too. And in 17 years of practice most of these questions I have never asked a child!( or most adults)
