Who is Shirking the Housework??

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Reuters) - No one likes routine housework, but Japanese men are among the world's most artful dodgers of the duty, a new survey of how men and women in seven countries spend their time revealed on Tuesday.

The study by the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research showed Japanese men spend only a quarter of the time on household chores that their American counterparts do, and only one-sixth of that devoted to housework by Swedish males.

Japanese men do only four hours of cooking, cleaning and other housework a week, the study found, compared to the 16 hours American men spend a week on such tasks.

While the workload for American men had risen from 12 hours a week in 1965, it was still less than the 24 hours a week put in by "gender egalitarian" Swedish males.

Overall women in those countries still did more housework than men. American women spend about 27 hours a week on housework, according to the study, compared to Japanese women who do 29 hours a week and Swedish women who do 33 hours.

Prepared by an institute that ranks itself as the world's largest academic survey and research organization, the study was based on results from Canada, Russia, Finland and Hungary as well as the United States, Sweden and Japan.

It notes that most people rate routine housework as the least enjoyable use of their time.

Among other findings, the study showed that leisure time is greatest in Japan, Sweden and the United States and lowest in Hungary, for both men and women

For all those too busy doing housework right now, I'll bump this thread later on when you have time.

Could be somewhat overstated. Japanese men live in the smallest houses in the industrialized world, and so the time it takes to do housework would be less.

If God had intended for men to do housework, he wouldn't have given us sports.

My house work entails vacuuming (love my Rainbow), and cooking.

I do NOT do laundry, never.

How about tearing up old carpeting and padding in advance of the carpeting guys ... in order to better fasten down the flooring in order to eliminate squeaks ... does that count? It certainly qualifies as a royal pain in the butt ... ;)

Men work outside the home and provide the money for everything.
When men are home they help the women as needed.

Women work in the home to provide a nurturing environment and raise children (including schooling them).

If you don't have this arrangement then you are failing yourselves.

My kids don't even know WHERE the washing machine is located in our home! Do their own? lol

Ok you two, Cagey and Rush - you both know I do everything - my husband doesn't NEED to do even 4 hours of housework a week...much less in a month! He will help, but it is my job - he brings home the money, I spend it..... I think that is fair.....

Rush, I ALWAYS get my work done so I can watch my sports... lol

Cagey has to much time on his hands to find the perfect picture for every post.

Maybe he could open a house cleaning business to help out harried housewives! LOL

Just incase you are unaware of them, Rainbow Vacuum Cleaners are made by RexAire. They are the greatest vacuum cleaner ever made. They use water filtration (like a giant bong) instead of bags and filters. The amount of crap that regular vacuum cleaners miss is unbelieveable. If you have cats or dogs they are especially wonderful.

Brand new they run @ $1,600. I bought mine used with all sorts of wonderful attachments for $225.

eBay has a lot of Rainbows available.

I have an attachment for cleaning hardwood, tile, or vinyl floors that is incredible. Poor water and cleaner on the floor and with one side of the attachment you "brush" the floor to clean it and then flip over the attachment and suck everything up. Never mop again. Plus it has a mini head for cleaning stairs and furniture. I love it. I will have a Rainbow for as long as I am the one vacuuming.

I can vouch for the less time aspect. We live in a small home and it doesn't take me anywhere near 27 hrs. a week to keep up. What are these folks doing to need 27 hrs, mopping the floor with a Q-Tip?

Rush, I have often commented to Cagey on his ability to find "the perfect" picture....

I personally think, he, not algore, invented the internet and has all these pictures in a filing cabinet in his office.....

As far as him hiring out to help harried housewives.... would YOU want someone called "Cagey" at home, alone, with YOUR wife? lol

That depends on what the meaning of "your wife" is!
