[Mary] Robinson vows to continue 'irritating' US
The Irish Independent ^ | March 20th 2002 | Alan O'Keeffe

MARY Robinson vowed yesterday to continue "irritating and annoying" powerful interests to protect basic human rights.

Mrs Robinson said she would work "flat out" in her final six months as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

When she left that job, she would seek ways to protect the world's poor from the impoverishing effects of globalisation, she said.

The former Irish president said it was part of her job as defender of human rights around the world to annoy powerful countries.

Accepting she had been critical of the US bombing of Afghanistan and the US treatment of prisoners at Camp X-ray in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, she said human rights in the world had to be protected, even when terrorism was violating people's fundamental right to life.

But she made clear there had been no change in human rights' standards.

"What is very worrying at the moment is the number of queries to our office asking if we could explain how the rules have changed. If it was alright to have military tribunals ... or to detain indefinitely," she said on RTE's Morning Ireland programme. She said human rights remained sacrosanct.

"The fact that this either irritates or annoys the US or any other state that is, I'm afraid, part of the job," she said.

The integrity of human rights was under threat since the September 11 terror attacks in the US. But all 53 countries on the Commission on Human Rights must look to see how to advance human rights rather than just seeking to protect their own interests, she said.

When she left her post, she hoped to use her skills to bring about more ethical and fair "rules of the road" for globalisation.

This woman is the personification of the word JERK!!

There are so many countries that oppress their own people. The US has delivered more money, food, and medicine to the weak and poor than any entity in history.

Hey, Mary - have you ever "irritated" China, North Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cuba, Iraq or Venezuela about their egregious human rights abuses?

No?

I see . . . so it's bad for the US to detain animals who murder women and children, but it's just fine for China to execute people for holding prayer meetings. OK. You're not a moron or anything.

Lol, she would be a perfect match for her countryman by the name of Paul Hewson aka Bono if he weren't already married. She is sadly mistaken if she thinks she is a big thorn in the side of the U.S. She's merely a pesky little gnat. I mainly remember her from the African racism conference fiasco of last year, which was hilariously pathetic.

Hey Mary, instead of just mouthing...become an activist...
Go down to Gitmo and volunteer to empty the prisoners' buckets...
That way, you can listen first hand to their complaints
and be doing something useful at the same time.

You're pretty good at spewing buckets of sh|t, anyway.

Thanks for the post!

Attention B$tch Robin$on! You have to have some power and a real platform to irritate us. You can reach the maggots of the left on their downwards slope to the ash heap of history. We could care less what you do.

You will be lucky to get a cab in NY City by yourself. In a year noone besides the maggots of the left will even know who you are!

Adios and enjoy your quick slide in the ash heap for worthless Clymers who lost it!

Can't we pay her to go "irritate" Vincente Fox to distract him from irritating the rest of us.

"The fact that this either irritates or annoys the US or any other state that is, I'm afraid, part of the job," she said.

That's pretty funny. If US pulls out of UN, what's going to happen to UN's human rights program? Who's going to enforce anything?

This foolish woman who was largely responsible for the Durban, South Africa hate festival and orgy of anti-semitism that was the prelude to 9/11, is forever stained by her record.

What's the difference between her and the rest of the UN slime?

All they want is more money from the US and for that we have to put up with their Bulls*&#

Just like all the other EU projects, when we leave the next 1000 years it's nothing being done they just argue.

You Bet !!

When she states that "...she would seek ways to protect the world's poor from the impoverishing effects of globalisation...", why isn't her first step somethin' along the lines of pulling every plug that the untied nations draws power from??
Then doing everything in her un-ending lines of resources to get rid of that Terrorist Organization completely ?? ??
