OMAHA, Neb. -- A pickup truck exploded in south Omaha Tuesday evening and investigators believe illegal fireworks may be to blame.
The explosion happened near 40th and P streets at about 4:30 p.m. The blast blew the roof and door off the truck. It also sent debris flying 70 feet away.
At least six homes in the neighborhood suffered minor damage as a result.
Police said Gary Zdan of Council Bluffs was found bleeding at the scene was taken into custody. Officers want to know Zdan's relationship to the truck, which is registered to a construction company.
"It's just absolutely incredible that a person was in or near that vehicle and survived that," Capt. Dave Friend said.
Officers said they found evidence of illegal fireworks at the scene. Federal agents were called in to investigate the explosion.

*LOL* Another crazy dude with a truck and fireworks in a mishap.
Man kept in jail after Kool-Aid bomb blows up his truckYAKIMA -- A man who said he was experimenting with a Kool-Aid-containing explosive compound for homemade fireworks when his truck blew up will remain in jail pending a federal grand jury investigation. Thomas R. Webster, 45, of Yakima, was ordered held without bail yesterday ...
Webster's 1971 yellow pickup truck exploded on June 13, destroying the vehicle, scattering debris 150 feet away and starting several small fires. Webster told ATF Special Agent Eric Floyd that he had been making an explosive called HMTD and was writing a how-to manual for making fireworks. Webster said he had been making the compound in his apartment for more than a year and was storing it in the back of his truck, Floyd testified. The truck was parked in a parking lot adjacent for the four-plex apartment house where he lived when it blew up.

Most fireworks are illegal in Nebraska. Because they're dangerousWhat? Fireworks or Nebraskans? Fireworks aren't dangerous if used properly. However this man apparently didn't. BTW, have I ever told you about the bottle rocket and roman candle fights I used to have with other kids in my neighborhood?
To: IronJack
Hey, I don't think the council bluffs folks will appreciate that comment at all, LOL.

Oh gosh, maybe I'd better get that can of black powder and 4 foot of cannon fuse out of my truck then, hahaha.

Oh, the memories. I've many a war wounds sustained while engaging in bottle rocket warfare...

The explosion blew all the car windows out and broke store windows. They got messed up pretty bad but lived. One was deaf in one ear after the incident. I'll mark that one as a near-Darwin experience.

Good points. The trip back home after the holiday could be a big show at your local airport - dogs going beserk from all the smoke infested clothes, Junior's attempt to take home a stash of crackers discovered with great alarm, etc. Even worse ... crack the firecrackers and put the powder in a pepper shaker and just walk around the airport.
