Left in extreme heat of car, baby dies

By SHARON TURCO, sturco@news-press.com

A 1-year-old Lehigh Acres boy died after his parents left him in their car minivan for more than four hours Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Daniel McCray?s second birthday would have been next month.

Dr. Doug Kelley, of the District 21 Medical Examiner?s Office was scheduled to perform an autopsy today.

How Daniel died may be determined then, said Lt. Barry Futch, of the Lee County Sheriff?s Office.

David and Jo Ann McCray, of 4111 Seventh St. W., in Lehigh Acres,Florida refused to comment Monday.

?I know they would never have done this on purpose,? said Reiko Ginac, Daniel?s maternal grandmother.

Futch said the McCrays returned from church with their five children at about 1 p.m. Sunday, letting Daniel out of his car seat but leaving him in the van.

The McCrays noticed Daniel was missing at about 6 p.m., as the McCrays were getting ready to return to church, Futch said.

They found him laying under the minivan?s second seat. They called 911, but Daniel was already dead, Futch said.

I don't care what defense some of you might want to give these parents. Who the hell forgets about a child that is not even 2 for 4 hours? Give me a break and give them the chair. I am sick of it.

I don't know why it came out with question marks like that everywhere.

My gosh, this is happening so frequently I am beginning to wonder if this is the new way to get rid of unwanted children. It always seems that the idiot parent goes into the house and "falls asleep" or "takes a nap". What is up with that??

What is with these parents?! I don't believe, for a minute, that all this can be summed up to "forgetfulness."

Almost as idiotic as this being taken out of breaking news? I guess not...anyway...to your point...I could not imagine not knowing where my 2 yr old was for more than 4 minutes...let alone 4 hours.

I think it's because a huge percentage of the population never reads a newspaper, never watches the news, never finished high school (or only finished high school), and completely tunes out the minute anybody begins to talk about anything that doesn't have to do with their little world; i.e., soccermoms. And these people vote -- democrats most of them.

I have always felt horribly about this but isn't it time that we all acknowledge that we all know what can happen when a child is left unattended in an automobile? There is no defense anymore. This is now an overt act of manslaughter. There isn't any way that anybody can claim ignorance of what can happen.
These people belong in jail. This should now be treated like shaken baby syndrome.
We've excused this happening two hundred times already. Enough is enough!

Or, at least cut his nuts off and remove her tubes. These idiots cannot be trusted to have any future children, for they might "forget" they exist. If I believed social services did any good I'd like to see them get involved. Then again, IDIOT parents are probably better than government parents.

Not to mention the fact that human life has been so devalued and the concept of personal responsibility has gone the way of the dinosaur.

The same thing happened near me in Manassas VA. A father with 11/12/13 kids (can't remember the exact amount, but it was quite a few) left a 16 month old in a van. Seems the mother and oldest daughter were in Ireland and the dad was just overwhelmed with the amount of kids to watch. Very, very sad. Apparently a lovely Catholic family, very active in the church. Father has had charges brought against him. I think it was a type of homicide/neglect type charge.

Parents don't "forget" their children. I wonder why cases like this are popping up with such alarming frequency.

Here's another one, unfortunately.

Little Creek sailor's son left in car, later dies

NORFOLK -- The Navy is investigating the death of an 11-month-old boy who was left unattended in an automobile Saturday afternoon while his mother, a sailor, was at her duty station nearby at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base.

The child, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was taken by ambulance about 4:30 p.m. after Navy medical personnel attempted to revive him, said Cmdr. Terry Sutherland, a spokesman for the Surface Force Atlantic Fleet.

The mother, who also was not identified by name, is 20 years old and a sailor assigned to Amphibious Construction Battalion Two at Little Creek, Sutherland said.

She was questioned by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. No criminal charges have been filed. The woman was not taken into custody and is not considered to be a flight risk, Sutherland said.

Details about the incident remain sketchy, Sutherland said.

The woman reported to work about 1 p.m. Saturday and left the child in her automobile, checking on him during the day.

About 4 p.m. when she visited him, she noticed he was having problems and took him to Boone Clinic, a medical facility on base. When personnel there could not revive him, they called for an ambulance, which took him to Norfolk General.

A cause of death has not been determined, Sutherland said.

A medical report is expected on Tuesday.

Temperatures at Norfolk International Airport were in the mid- to upper 80s early Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. They peaked at around 90 by mid-afternoon.

Who? Apparently 2 parents and 4 older siblings! Makes you wonder about the home life of these diligent church-goers.

"Futch said the McCrays returned from church with their five children at about 1 p.m. Sunday, letting Daniel out of his car seat but leaving him in the van."

It's too bad these people are capable of breeding like rabbits, but can't protect their own. This story sickens me.

Apparently they must get their meals at church.

No one thought about feeding the baby for a six hour interval?

I do not believe these people!

Unfortunately, I have been reading at least two stories a week about this happening all throughout the country all summer long. Some people are too irresponsible to be a parent.

My family is sorta old fashioned and still have "Sunday dinner" at Grandma's every Sunday afternoon. There is always a lot of children (some ours, some "extras") all of varying ages.

However, you constantly hear, statements and questions every 2 or 3 minutes such as, "Who is watching Laura, where is Seth, did Sam go outside with the men, I just checked on the baby, and she is still asleep"?

You can't forget a child that age for 4 hours.

Strap them into a minivan in full sunlight with the windows up.

Check on them every two hours or so, but don't open the doors or windows. Just tap on the glass with a glass of ice water.

Televise it, and use the footage for Ad Council public interest ads. It might save some kids' lives.
