Fires burning on more than 438,000 acres across Oregon

Major wildfires have burned and are burning on more than 438,000 acres in Oregon on Friday. About 12,000 firefighters are working in the state. The Northwest Interagency Communication Center is tracking at least nine major fires in Oregon. Top priorities for fire officials were the 150,000-acre Florence fire, the 17,000-acre Timbered Rock fire, the 38,000-acre Sour Biscuit Fire, and the 26,850-acre Tiller Complex.

LUCKY FIRE

Started: 7/29/02, 10 p.m. six miles south of Detroit.

Size:87 acres

Containment: 70 percent

Evacuations: None.

Damages: None yet. In heavy timber.

On scene: 168 firefighters.

Cause: Lightning

CACHE MOUNTAIN:

Started: 7/24/02, 15 miles northwest of Sisters, Oregon

Size: 4,200 acres.

Containment: 95 percent.

Evacuations: None at this time.

Damage: Two homes destroyed.

On scene: about 1,179 firefighters.

Cause: Lightning.

TOOLBOX FIRE

Started: in Lake County 07/12/02

Size: 86,794 acres

Containment: 75 percent

Evacuations: None at this time.

Damage: None reported.

On scene: 1,768

Cause: Lightning.

MALHEUR-FLAGTAIL COMPLEX

Started: 8-25 miles from Prairie City, 07/12/02.

Size: 86,794 acres.

Containment: 75 percent.

Evacuations: No evacuation as of August 1.

Damage: None.

On scene: 1,768 firefighters

Cause: Lightning

TILLER COMPLEX

Started: Outside Tiller, east of Canyonville off Interstate 5, 07/12/02.

Size: 26,850 acres.

Containment: 25 percent

Evacuations: South Umpqua Road closed at milepost 6. Fifteen residence threatened. Tribal ceremonial grounds and critical cultural resources are threatened.

Damage: No listed damage.

On scene: 1,051 firefighters

Cause: Lightning.

MONUMENT FIRE

Started: 9 miles southwest of Unity, 07/12/02

Size: 24,378 acres

Containment: 75 percent.

Evacuations: None at this time.

Damage:None.

On Scene: 1,154 firefighters.

Cause: Lightning.

FLORENCE FIRE

Started: 26 miles west of Grant Pass, 07/13/02.

Size: 150,000 acres.

Containment: 5 percent.

Evacuations: The entire Illinois Valley on notice to evacuate.

Damage: 3 residences and 8 outbuildings.

On scene: 1,546 firefighters.

Cause: Lightning.

SOUR BISCUIT FIRE

Started: 17 miles southwest of Cave Junction

Size: 33,287 acres.

Containment: 0 percent containment

Evacuations: None yet.

Damage: no

On scene: 436.

Cause: lightning

TIMBERED ROCK FIRE

Started: Unknown. 20 miles north of Medford.

Size: 16,925 acres

Containment: 20 percent

Evacuations: Elk Creek Road is closed except to fire vehicles. Evacuation area for all addresses along Elk Creek Road, 143 homes, is still in effect. No homes were immediately threatened by yesterday's fire activity and no homes have been lost. August 1.

Damage: None

On Scene: 1,163 firefighters

Cause: lightning

Gramps, the air quality hasn't been this bad since about 20 years ago during an inversion/heavy woodstove burning period. That event preceded me, so i can't compare. Open the windows here & the house smells like someone has a campfire going in the living room. We are 100 miles away.

They declared war on us about 20 years ago. It is time we declare war on them. They are far more dangerous to our lives, our freedom and our safety than the al Qaeda thugs/terrorists. I haven't seen any figures regarding the collective monentary losses resulting from these horrific fires over the past few years, but I would speculate that it may well exceed that caused by Atta and his cowardly comrades on September 11th. Consider the timber destroyed, the homes lost, the lives displaced...for some reason, these fires have not outraged the American community as much as the terrorist act in NYC and Washington, but that needs to change. These eco-fascists are just as diseased as the members of Hamas and Al'Queda...terrorists all. Most of us have seen the "wanted poster" of the nineteen scumbags involved in the terrorist acts of September 11th...we need to do something similar with the eco-fascists: a "wanted poster" with the names AND photos of those responsible for the policies that have led to the destruction of the American west and southwest by fire. These people need to be exposed...the people whose lives have been disrupted or destroyed by these fires need to have names and photos they can focus on, so they can see the face of the enemy. Who is the head of the Sierra Club? Let's see his face. We know the names of the organizations involved in the eco-fascist movement...let's get the names, pictures, and e-mails of those prominent in these organizations so those who lives have been destroyed may confront them. Civil suits against organizations and individuals? Other ideas? Feedback? Grandpa Dave is right...we are at war with the terrorists responsible for September 11th, and it is HIGH TIME we go to war with the eco-fascists that are burning our country down to the ground right before our very eyes.

I heard this interview, yesterday, and I had to turn off the computer and leave. I was afraid that if I stay, I would really get mad. Then I would have gone and charted a flight to Medford, rent a SUV and went out to find these Clintoonian Pink Panty Wearing Florist Maggots pretending to be fire fighters. Then I would have been in an Oregon jail this morning.

I about set my computer on fire while listening Lars, just from my body heat. If I had been wearing Capris, they would have been scorched.

Fortunately, I had just finished cleaning one of my new Spey Rods and had put it away in its protective case. Other wise I might have used an expensive fly fishing rod to beat the speakers of my computer when I heard what was said.

Flames and smoke erupting from a planned burnout between a containment line and the highway made residents here wary despite assurances from the U.S. Forest Service that the blaze was well under control.

Haven't read the whole thread or many of the others on these fires, so I don't know if you've seen this yet. Have you seen the fire maps and all of the fire information available on the Internet?

First, you can go to the National Interagency Fire Center. They used to have a link on that home page to the fire maps, but now they don't. The fire maps are located at this website. The one I like that gives a lot of information is the active fire maps link in the middle of the page (clicking it brings up another window to select the region you want to see), but the other links have tons of pictures and maps to see where fires are burning. They are updated daily.

Broadband is very desireable as the maps are huge and very detailed. Here's the latest one for the Western states showing the size of the fires in Oregon. It is a huge file that takes a while to load, even with broadband.....
