The security cabinet approved on Wednesday Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's proposal to incorporate Rachel's Tomb, located outside of Bethlehem, within a security ring being built around Jerusalem. Access to the holy site was guaranteed by Israeli-Palestinian agreements but the violence of the past two years has made it difficult for worshippers to visit. Critics said the cabinet decision "annexed" the territory into Jerusalem city limits.
The cabinet-approved plan calls for a new access road to the tomb to be built by the IDF and the Jerusalem Municipality. The army's roadblock and crossing point from Bethlehem into Jerusalem would be moved 200 meters to the south. The cabinet decision was reached as part of the deliberations regarding the construction of a defensive barrier around Jerusalem to prevent infiltration of Palestinian terrorists into the city.

Is this the only tomb to a Hebrew matriarch in dispute? I seem to remember, maybe last year, that there was conflict over a tomb of an important Hebrew woman---the Arabs painted the roof blue, or something. Is this Rachel's tomb, or does Sarah also have one?

Well Rachael's tomb should be in Israel. She was a Jewess not a Palestinian. Now if we can just get them to re-annex the Temple Mount.BWHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Think the tomb you are referring to was Joseph's tomb which Palestinian mobs tried to destroy.

Thanks. Was I right that they tried to paint it blue? Blue is the color to ward off the "Evil Eye" of the jin. That's why the women of Afghanistan wore blue burquas. Men aren't as evil as women, so they didn't have to wear blue.

From the same article:
Wednesday's cabinet decision came in sharp contrast with the fate of Joseph's Tomb in Nablus, which was destroyed by the Palestinians and transformed into a mosque following the IDF's relinquishing of control there. Methinks the decision by the Israeli government to protect this ancient site from the Palestinian Taliban is a good one.
(I use "Palestinian Taliban" very deliberately to remind you that the Afghanistan Taliban did to those huge, ancient stone Buddhist statues back in March, 2001.) http://www.newslookmag.com/fullcoverage/taliban_destruction.htm

Don't recall the "Blue color" incident. But to the Jews. The blue signifies the Torah.I think more than painting the Israelites were concerned bout them desecrating a holy sight.
The bones of Joseph had been brought back from Egypt on the Exodus so I am sure they are very revered.

More examples of tolerance from The Religion of Peace.

Should we list more examples of religious tolerance?
My favorite example is their destruction of the 60 ft. stone statues of Buddha carved into the Afghan mountainside, saying they were nothing more than rocks.
But, of COURSE we should give them control of every Christian and Jewish Holy Site in the region. THEY can be trusted to be good stewards of the lands, heritages, treasures, interests, and religious beliefs that are concerned.

It is anachronistic to call Rachel a Jewess--there were no Jews until later. She wasn't a descendant of Abraham, but rather the great-granddaughter of Abraham's brother (see Genesis 11.26-32, 24.15, 28.5, 29.16). Rachel was the mother of Joseph and Benjamin; the Jews seem to be mainly descended from the tribe of Judah (but to have absorbed remnants of the other tribes--St. Paul, of the tribe of Benjamin, sometimes includes himself in "the Jews"). Judah was one of the sons of Rachel's sister Leah.

Thanks. It's good to see there are others who have the basics straight.
