September 16, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence officials fear that Saddam Hussein has concocted a doomsday plan that would use al Qaeda to attack America with Iraqi-provided biological weapons, The Post has learned.

The threat has been raised in secret intelligence assessments provided to top military officials and White House policymakers as they prepare for war, administration officials told The Post.

How about that the intel community catches up with Free Republic's carnivores in estimating Saddam's possible use of bio-weapons. This was discussed here last year when the anthrax attacks were current.

Stay well - Stay safe - Stay armed - Yorktown

It's not likely, it's highly probable, but we can't let that effect our decision to take him out. We are at war, some of us may die, that's just the way it is, each and every one of us are almost as likely to die in this war as our soldiers on the scene.

If we wait until these radical nations attain nuclear weapons then the entire USofA will go down in tar and brimstone eventually, that also is highly probable, especially given the idiocy at our borders. So we fight.

Good call.

Though they're still endorsing my opinion that Saddam is handing the stuff over to Al Qaeda, rather than doing it himself.

Still, it appears that he may be directing them, if this info is accurate.

The scenario may be true. However, the scenario 3 years down the road would be much worse. It is time to step on this cockroach now. He has the capability to kill some of us now. He will have the capability to kill many more of us in the future.

It is very important for all the Iraqi military to know if chem or bio weapons are use against this nation that all population centers in Iraq of any consequence will be attacked with thermonuclear weapons. Saddam may be a mad man but his military men do have families that they do not wish to die. The absolute terror of destruction of self and family on his military can be the key to the over throw of Saddam by his own people. It is a very sad fact of war that the civilian population are a key player in the support and conduct of the war. In WW II they were made legitimate targets by Britain and the United States. The terror and destruction of the infrastructure brought Germany and Japan to their knees and in the end saved millions of allied lives. As grim as it is that is the way of war. When your enemy knows you are willing to remove any vestige of giving quarter in your fight, he will fear you and not attack you. The recent attacks against our country are the result of an enemy that did not understand the ability and will of our country to send death and destruction to their doorsteps. A result of judging this country by the 8 years of Clinton. They have made a fatal error.

This game is hardball and those not prepared to play for keeps will lose.

Exactly. Articles like this simply serve to give the doves more ammo for why we shouldn't invade Iraq. They can't seem to come to terms with the fact that whether we attack or not, these weapons will be used. Better on the defensive than on the offensive.

While it's true that the threat of nuclear weapons is normally a strong deterrent, we are fighting a different kind of war against fanatics and who knows if such a threat will impact their decisions in any way.

Saddam is a nut job, he's the type, like Hitler, who will want to take the entire world with him, even his own. So we really have to be prepared to be more steely and determined in our fight than they are.

I know some of our citizens do not have the neccessary resolve and would never have it, even should Saddam's elite forces be kicking their doors in, the same with many of our politicians. They had rather put off today, what will have to be faced tomorrow. We just have to be the grown ups and when neccessary flood D.C. and the media with phone calls telling them to grow a spine. This will be especially neccessary when the body bags begin to be filled with our brave and noble young soldiers and possibly civilians here at home. We have to win this, if it's easy, good, if it's not easy then the tuff need to get going when the going gets tuff.

2 + 2 = 4

Somebody spelled it out for Niles Lathem, of all people. My impression of his reports is that they tend to be a bit breathless and tabloidy. Accordingly, I wonder if he, or the New York Post for that matter, are taken seriously in their reporting on weighty matters like this.

That the initial mainstream media "leak" on this subject went through this channel suggests to me that it will NOT receive official confirmation (until, perhaps, after the fact). Instead, the intent is to create a "buzz" and lend another layer of seriousness to the doctrine of preemption.

Just reading the PR leaves. But, as before, we shall see what we shall see...

The latest Hosenball article in Newsweek says much the same thing as this Post story. Given that the only biological weapon we know for sure Saddam has is anthrax, it is comical how Hosenball struggles to avoid using the "A" word in his piece:
As the Bush administration prepares to oust Saddam, one way or another, senior administration officials are very worried that Saddam will try to use his WMD arsenal. Intelligence experts have warned that Saddam may be “flushing” his small, easy-to-conceal biological agents, trying to get them out of the country before an American invasion. A vial of bugs or toxins that could kill thousands could fit in a suitcase—or a diplomatic pouch. There are any number of grim end-game scenarios. Saddam could try blackmail, threatening to unleash smallpox or some other grotesque virus in an American city if U.S. forces invaded. Or, like a cornered dog, he could lash out in a final spasm of violence, raining chemical weapons down on U.S. troops, handing out his bioweapons to terrorists. “That’s the single biggest worry in all this,” says a senior administration official. “We are spending a lot of time on this,” said another top official.

Some administration critics have said, in effect, let sleeping dogs lie. Don’t provoke Saddam by threatening his life; there is no evidence that he has the capability to deliver weapons of mass destruction. [Then why wory about provoking him?] Countered White House national-security adviser Condoleezza Rice, “Do we wait until he’s better at it?” Several administration officials indicated that an intense effort is underway, covert as well as overt, to warn Saddam’s lieutenants to save themselves by breaking from the dictator before it’s too late. “Don’t be the fool who follows the last order” is the way one senior administration official puts it.

It's like Basil Fawlty: "Don't mention the [anthrax]. Whatever you do, don't mention the [anthrax]!" Some "grotesque virus" indeed! LOL! The code words are flying thick and fast.

Oh, well, some truths are better left unspoken, some ideas better left just out of focus. There's more comfort in looking through the glass darkly than in facing reality head on, is there not?

Guess I am having a senior moment today. Which of Tom Clancy's books had the Iranian's traveling to various locations with aerosol bottles of a form of ebola? I read it several years ago, but can't remember which it was. Executive Orders?

Executive orders. The terrs set off the aerosols in convention halls throughout the country, from which people would return to their homes all through the country.

I always thought that a more effective place to release it would be in an airport which is a hub for one or more airlines.

The more I read about Saddam's sons and their inner circle, the scarier it gets. This clan is psychotic.

I have only read a few of Clancy's books even though I do enjoy his work. I'm currently reading Oliver North's new book my wife grabbed at a signing for me last week here in Nashville. I'm a third of the way thru and am enjoying it so far. It is a bit grandstanding but a good read. I think he has basically applied his own adventures to a 90s time period.

Jeepers, harp! I hope you haven't consigned me to vegetarianism.

An Iraqi bio-knife at America's throat has has been my interpretation of the anthrax letters since Freeper LarryLied first broke the news of the American Media case in Florida, two days before the mainstream press acknowledged it.

Agree with you, Satan. Absent any hard proof to the contrary, I will continue to believe that last year's anthrax attack was: (a) a test run, (b) it was initiated by Atta's gang and carried forward by an as-yet unknown accomplice or accomplices, (c) it was "sponsored" by Hussein.
