September 16, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence officials fear that Saddam Hussein has concocted a doomsday plan that would use al Qaeda to attack America with Iraqi-provided biological weapons, The Post has learned.

The threat has been raised in secret intelligence assessments provided to top military officials and White House policymakers as they prepare for war, administration officials told The Post.

We can either attack him now, on our terms, or later, on his.

Exactly the President's point, although why some (notably Leftists/Dems) refuse to get it is beyond me. Politics aside, they and their families are just as vulnerable as the rest of us to use of WMD by nutcases like Saddam and any radical Islamists he decides to use as agents.

Oh, well, some truths are better left unspoken, some ideas better left just out of focus. There's more comfort in looking through the glass darkly than in facing reality head on, is there not?

It looks like the public is being prepared for the possibility of a bio-attack, without mentioning how likely that attack is.

The truth is, the probability is very high. The question is when?

One view holds that Saddam has used the threat of a biological attack as a deterent against attack by the United States. I suspect that has been the case in the past. However, regardless of whether this has been the case in the past or not, it is clear that we are currently getting ready to attack. We are not currently deterred, and Saddam must certainly realize this.

Which raises the question: Given the inevitability of a U.S. attack, will Saddam wait until we attack him, or will he strike us first?

If he decides to wait he runs the risk that we will be able to kill him at the start of the attack. He is quite interested in his own survival (evidently his 72 virgins and 3 young boys can wait). So he may conclude that a first strike is his best shot.

A first strike is certain to result in the retaliatory destruction of Iraq, but not necessarily in Saddam's personal destruction. If he can make his blow strong enough, he may believe he can weaken us enough to prevent us from being able to physically root him out of whatever shelter he is hiding in.

If he thinks he is cooked either way, then I suspect he will strike first in an attempt to bring as many of us down with him as possible.

Ultimately, I believe Saddam will do whatever he thinks optimizes his chances for long-term survival.

Interesting piece in this morning's Washington Times: "Gulf war planner urges new Iraq strategy: Says tactics of 1991's Desert Storm would be ineffective against Saddam now".

All this and little Tommy & Co. still need more convincing that Saddam poses a clear and present danger to the west. I guess he is better prepared to sustain more American casualties than see Bush get credit for superior leadership in an election year.

I am reading the same book by North! In fact I was a little late for work this morning as I was to a pretty good part.

North's work seems better than Clancy. Not as detailed a plot, but more believable.

Yep ...and how do you like his constant digs at Clinton's slouchers at the NSC?....very nice. North doesn't pull many punches with his disdain.

I don't think he realizes anything of the sort. This is a game of Chicken: the outcome is still unknown.

Me: We are not currently deterred, and Saddam must certainly realize this.

You: I don't think he realizes anything of the sort. This is a game of Chicken: the outcome is still unknown.

Maybe at one time it was, but I don't see it that way now. To be a game of chicken, each side must believe the other side may eventually back down.

Personally, I think President Bush has gone too far to back down now. Likewise with Saddam.

I agree completely, however, that the outcome is still unknown. Most Americans vastly underestimate how serious a major attack on us could be. The stakes are incredibly high.

"If he's got these stocks of chemical and biological weapons and he knows he's toast, don't you think he'll use what he can and give away what he can't to people who will be using them against us for years to come so he can have the last laugh?" Clinton said.

Yea... so what? I don't listen to a rapist/traitor.

We are here. Let them come to find our mettle and the wrath of our sword. Let their God sort them out!

No. The stakes are as high as they ever were. Some men fight and some don't.

Saddam will be having lunch in a dumpster soon. Life goes topsy-turvy sometimes.

Go dig a bigger hole junior.

LOL. We'd like to get off the various "lists" while Sabertooth wants to get on them. Saber if you want in, initiation is to engage in activities like buying ammo on line or say something foul about the BATF.

It's very easy to join our "club" and there is plenty of room for you on various data bases!

Even more chilling, Saddam could provide al Qaeda or other terror groups with easy-to-conceal biological agents that could be smuggled into U.S. and Israeli cities - once he sees a serious American military build-up, officials said.

"This is what we are most concerned about and what we are working hardest on," said one high-ranking official.

Good thing we closed our borders on 9/11/01...Doh !
