"What I did is not good, but I had no choice," he said in the radio interview from his cell."

He had no choice?

The FBI said national landmarks, the aviation, oil and nuclear industries were possible targets.

Since al-Qaeda has such a fetish for American landmarks, we should return the favor and nuke Mecca.

Fortunately, a nuclear weapons bunker is built a little bit stronger than an embassy. .

It sounds like this potential Islamokazi, Nizar Trabelsi, blocked too many kicked soccer balls with his head.

Seems to be a whole lot of the shallow end of the al Qaeda Gene Pool being arrested and admitting some really dumb schemes.

"(AL QAEDA) Terrorist planned nuclear base raid "

Having served in the Air Force for four years and having seen some of the security around USAF nuke storage bunkers and uploaded nukes on alert aircraft, al Queda would never succede in this plan. Way too much security. Even Air Force personnel aren't allowed to be alone around nukes. NO ONE is trusted around nukes. As for crashing into a supposed nuke bunker --- well, these are hardened to withstand quite a bit of force. This is assuming one can find a bunker with nukes in the first place.

The former German league player lived in London in the late 1990s and listened to sermons from the Islamic cleric Abu Qatada, who has been linked to al-Qa'eda

This is the source of the rot. So-called clerics who preach hatred and murder. Naive people who listen to this sort of brainwashing, week in and week out can be turned into homicidal maniacs.

Like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton inciting a riot, it is these leaders who are stirring up trouble and they ought to be the principal targets of our anti-terrorism efforts.

Why is it that every time these detainees speak, I get the feeling they've been reading Tom Clancy novels while in custody?

Thanks, Ivan.

This is the first I've heard of this incident. One wonders what other incidents the authorities have found beneficial to suppress. To my knowledge, a conventional explosion is unlikely to unleash a nuclear explosion. But it does remind us the Islamists are likely to continue to get whatever weapons they need from us -- nuclear devices, plutonium, smallpox, you name it.

What a steaming load of BS. Those storage igloos must be what, 10" thick poiured concrete? Plus how do you get the explosive truck into the base?

Nice catch!

Did you all know that BELGIUM BLOCKED OUR INVESTIGATION OF THIS GUY FOR ALMOST A YEAR!? (Pardon the shouting.)

Belgians block FBI terrorist inquiries

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in Brussels

(Filed: 18/10/2001)

BELGIUM is refusing to co-operate fully in the fight against terrorism and has denied FBI investigators access to crucial witnesses.

More than a month after the attacks in America, the FBI is still trying to obtain telephone records and contact addresses needed to track down the al-Qa'eda network in Europe, says the New York Times.

American officials scoffed at Belgian claims yesterday that the dispute was because of the FBI's failure to follow "proper procedure" or that they had been given the material wanted.

An official said: "Belgium signed an agreement to co-operate with America but we're certainly not seeing that kind of partnership yet."

*****Christian de Valkeneer, the Belgian judge in charge of terrorist investigations, has been "working to rule" to prevent FBI agents gaining access to his files. The delays may have allowed crucial leads to dry up.

The Americans are itching to talk to Nizar Trabelsi, a Tunisian arrested by the Belgians two days after the September 11 attacks, but Judge de Valkeneer refused to hand over information about his network of contacts.

According to the confession of Djamel Beghal, an Algerian terrorist now in the hands of the French, Trabelsi was preparing to carry out a suicide bombing mission against the American embassy in Paris.

In contrast Holland, Germany and Spain are working in a "joined-up" operation with the FBI, in some cases allowing Americans to take part in suspect interviews.

*****On Friday a Belgian court ordered the release of two terrorist suspects with al-Qa'eda ties who were caught with car bomb chemicals.

Belgium is a leading centre of Islamic extremists, especially the Algerian GIA Armed Islamic Group, which is linked to al-Qa'eda.

Judge de Valkeneer is no stranger to controversy. He has been accused of dragging his feet in an inquiry into foreign ministry corruption.

Just got a Nat'l Geographic today and read the article about "You may have mised this.."

The two page article appears to document a WMD event involving smallpox that was hushed up, but then in the last sentence declares the entire affair was a NSC drill conducted a year ago.

I really felt it was a poor play by the Society.

Those bombs should probably be removed from US bases in Europe. Europe is awash in terrorists and has nothing but Keystone Kops guarding the continent. With our B2 bombers, we surely don't need forward deployment of nukes anymore. Bring our Nukes home!

What did the confessor mean he "had no choice?" Bad journalism to report this, and not follow up with a question. Was his family threatened?

long overdue update on this old thread... the actual target was not the nuke storage areas the press was excited about but rather the base’s canteen.
