Making an example of Tom Daschle (Email FReep Opportunity)

Posted on 12/09/2002 6:00:20 PM PST by Jhoffa_

Hello.

Hey, did anyone catch Britt Hume’s panel addressing the Trent Lott foul up regarding Senator Thurmond?

In case you didn’t catch it, Lott made an offhand remark at Thurmond’s 100th birthday party that "We wouldn’t have the problems we have now if Strom Thurmond would have been elected President in 1948."

Now, unfortunately Thurmond was on the Dixiecrat ticket in ’48, and they were known for supporting segregation.

It was a mistake I am sure, a slip up. I am sure he wasn’t advocating segregation as the solution to anything but of course Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton immediately jumped on the bandwagon demonizing Lott and calling for his resignation. No surprise there.

While any reasonable person would realize this was a mistake and realize that Lott was probably just trying to honor the old man on his 100th birthday what surprised me was the universal condemnation by all of Hume’s panel (yes, Fred Barnes included) for this slip up. Mort K even suggested he had a "hidden segregationist lurking inside somewhere"

It was the most ridiculous thing I think I ever saw them say.

Then came Tom Daschles turn to address it before the press. After the rough reception Lott got from the Fox News crowd I figured Daschle would blast him for it and try to get the maximum political mileage out of this error possible.

I was wrong.

Tom Daschle called it an obvious mistake, said he knew Lott wasn’t endorsing segregation and basically blew the whole thing off grand style. Now, he may have not been sincere when he said it, but Daschle exhibited more grace and understanding than Hume’s whole panel did on the issue.

Since he is constantly whining about these "death threats" from Right Wing Ideologues like us, I thought it might be appropriate to send him a nice email, thanking him for his understanding and kind words tonight. As well as for not tainting Mr. Thurmonds 100th birthday with partisan bickering over the mistake.

Maybe he will remember it the next time he decides to beat the war drums about Rush, the Washington Times, Fox News and people like us.

Regards.

It's just one more opportunity to contrast the difference between us and the libs.

Interested parties can find Mr. Daschle's Web Based Email form here:

Nah. There's an agenda lurking there somewhere. Daschle doesn't have a nice bone in his body.

When will people realize they are one in the same.

Cozy "bedpartners"

There's got to be an alternative to the "big two" we need a viable 3rd party candidate who can "WIN" even if it takes a "massive" write-in campaign at the polls.

I'll probably be exiled from FR for a while over this one.

While I agree with you in regards to Mr. Daschole's comments on Fox News, beware! The Lott statement will probably appear in every Democratic ad in 2004, in an effort to demonstrate how "racist" the mean old nasty Republicans STILL are. Because of that (and because I think Mr. Lott has been a poor majority leader, as far back as 1995), I think the Republican Senate would be wise to elect someone else Majority Leader. (Takes an issue/ad away from the Dems.)

Hello Mr. Daschle.

As a Conservative Christian somewhere to the right of Rush I typically disagree with you on issues political but this is an exception.

I saw you on TV tonight gracefully forgive the obvious mistake made by Trent Lott regarding Senator Thurmond at his 100th birthday party.

It was an unfortunate and, well pretty dumb thing that Lott said, but I am sure it was an honest mistake and I wanted to take the opportunity to Thank You for recognizing it as such and taking the initiative.

It was very gracious and honest of you to do this in such a public forum and we Conservatives appreciate that.

Regards Senator.

I don't know what to make of Lott's comment. HOWEVER, I do know what to make of Gore's condemnation of Lott today. For those who may have missed it, Gore accused Lott of being a racist. This from the man whose own father was in favor of segregation and who voted against the Civil Rights Act. Rank hypocrisy........

I wonder when the media will call him on this one?

Oh sure.. I would never deny that he could have done the righ tthing for the wrong reason.

I just thought it WAS a nice thing to do and also thought it would be interesting if he got flooded with Conservatives Thank You's as opposed to these "death threats" he's always refering to.

Let them try to spin that..

See, all the more reason to honor Mr. Daschle for what he said.

Let him get flooded with "nice" mail for once.

After all, regardless of why he did it it was a nice thing to do. and it is in total contrast with algor, Jackass Jackson and Reverend Al.

Tell him thanks. He deserves it for once in his life.

Okay. But for the first time I can remember, Daschle honestly deserves a "Thank You"

(unlike gore, JJ and Al)

Well, that and it really was nice to hear him say it while all the others are just calculating how much mileage they can get out of it.

Plus I am sick to death of them painting us like dangerous wack jobs. Conservatives respect honesty and grace.

Agenda:

El Diablo D'Asshole becomes co-Majority Leader (active) when Leapin' Linc Chafee Dish leaps by the end of January, then full Majority Leader when McShame reveals his true colors in preparation for a run at GWB in 2004 by the end of July 2003.

Well ... as I said earlier, on another thread ...

Daschle will support Lott, because he'd rather have to deal with Lott than with any of the other GOP'ers waiting in the wings for Lott's job.

Oh, I agree that his motives might not have been pure and I am no fan of Trent Lott.

But, he did graciously accept Lott's apology. He did it publicly and he did it while Gore, Jackass and Sharpton are running around trying to make as much hay as they can while the sun is shining.

My position is purely a moral one, as opposed to a particular fondness for Daschle or Trent Lott's Senate leadership.

Please understand, Daschle never does ANYTHING without the approval of x42. That's the bottom line. This was a purely political stand, because Daschle can manipulate Lott and those who are waiting in the wings for Lott's job will be much tougher to maneuver around.

The interesting thing is this: our President has given Lott the word; it's my way or the highway. If Lott doesn't play his cards right (pun intended), he will suddenly decide to retire.

Soooooo, what Daschle doesn't understand is Lott will be much tougher than he is expecting him to be - I believe this is another case of the dems misunderestimating the Bush team again.

I know..

He's seen as a mean little obstructionist twerp who shut down the government every bit as effectively as Newt ever did. He's widely hated and polls below Al Sharpton.

But he said it, and it can't hurt to say thank you and mention you are one of those "mean spirited" Conservatives who listens to Rush in the process.

I honestly believe we ARE just inherently better than them and this is one more chance to make that distinction.

I don't care about what happens to Lott. I do think however that if he goes it should be because he's an inept leader as opposed to a racist.
