No it does not. Your assessment misses a significant segment of the black community. It also misses the point of having an approach which supports integrity. I'm more interested in my Party, the Republican Party, doing the right thing than doing the political thing. Sue me.

My letter to the editor regarding this matter will appear in the Washington Times tomorrow (Saturday):

While not a fan of Trent Lott, I feel compelled to respond to the selective outrage regarding his comments at Strom Thurmond’s 100th birthday. On May 5, 1993, the Washington Post quoted former President Clinton’s comments at an 88th birthday ceremony for former Arkansas Senator William Fulbright where Clinton bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom on the man he described as a “visionary humanitarian, a steadfast supporter of the values of education, and my mentor."

Of course, the man Clinton was praising was a rabid segregationist. In 1956, Fulbright was one of 19 senators who issued a statement entitled the "Southern Manifesto." This document condemned the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. Its signers stated, among other things, that "We commend the motives of those States which have declared the intention to resist forced integration by any lawful means."

Fulbright later voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. He voted against the 1965 Voting Rights Act. And he did so because he was a segregationist and believed in separating the races — in schools and other public places.

More recently, in October 2002, Clinton traveled to Arkansas to dedicate a 7 foot bronze statute to Fulbright, and still nothing from the press admonishing Clinton for honoring a racist.

I'm not making excuses for Trent Lott. He should have apologized for his insensitive comments, and he did. Nor am I making excuses for Strom Thurmond's past. I'm questioning the hypocrisy of selective moral outrage by the Left.

It took three apologies to get to a close approximation of an apology.

For you, because you want him gone. I accepted his first apology.

There's a difference between apologizing and doing the right thing - in other words, paying for the damage you've done. Maybe you've heard of the word "justice?"

Most people accept apologies when mere words were uttered.

Trent Lott didn't burn down anybody's house, did he?

If he said something reprehensible, then he should be able to say an apology.

Most normal people accept that.

If somebody calls you an SOB, do you demand that they quit their job to show they're sorry?

No, I don't think Lott should surrender his Senate Seat either. As I've said since watching Lott's press conference and noting his repeatedly groveling and apologizing ad nauseam, I can't see how Lott can retain his position as Majority Leader and still remain effective...

If he relinquished the Leadership, it can not appear to as a result of the hullabaloo. A few months time ought to suffice...

Nobody's ever called me an SOB, but I bet you've heard it once or twice.

Who do you suggest replace Lott.

Frist, Nickles, or the guy from Kentucky (now 2nd in command). Dont like any of those choices, then Jim Talent of Missouri. He will be in the leadership in a few years. He wrote the Welfare Reform bill when he was in congress.

So now you have DEMANDED my choice, whose yours, David Duke? Sorry he never got elected, did he?

Fabulous explanation.

I am puzzled why LOTT has yet to articulate and one of these great arguments?

"This is all about a Borking."

No Sh*t. By the way, anybody seen "Justice" Bork around the Supeme Court chambers lately?

History says, Borking works. Much of the time. Especially when you hand your enemies a loaded gun, with your compliments, like Lott did, and wish them happy hunting.

Put up or SHUT UP.

What the hell is that? I don't jump when you crack your whip.

If Lott decides to stay, I back him.

If he decides to leave, I'd favor McConnell. Nickles is not very polished, and Santorum's not seasoned enough to be leader.

Frist is part of the problem

What problem is that? He got us a majority in the Senate. He's smart and he can talk on TV without drooling or foaming at the mouth. He can also walk without his knuckles dragging on the ground.

Anybody with a killer instinct.

We need a Republican George Mitchell...cool as a cucumber in front of the cameras...a moderate image...but behind it all the fiercest of proactive partisans.

What would our tally have been had Thurmond been born November 1st?

He wasn't. If you hadn't stumbled across Free Republic, we wouldn't have had your wonderful support of John Sununu in October.

God is good, isn't He?

Re your 105 on this thread-

So is President Bush not normal?

Bush publicly reprimanded him AFTER his THIRD apology.

Look I am no fan of Lott. But I am also not in the Senate. Lott seems to be the best leader there, according to the other R senators. If this breaks him it could hurt the party as a whole. The Democrats want him to stay (which makes me more against him).

Newt was a great leader in my opinion he brought us 1994. What did he get for it. Booted out.

Now I can't put Lott in that category. I really believe that Bush is the one pushing the buttons. If Nickles can take over then great. I just do not know that he can.

Even if he did take over though I would hope Lott could remain and help the party get some Democrat cross-over votes that we will need to get anything passed.

The man had NO bite as a "Leader" before this debacle -- after watching him earlier, he's got nothing left in the tank down the line.

He's got to do some penance for the views he held many years ago.

I think it it will make him a better man. I also think he owes Bush and the agenda will be set by President Bush.

We'll see how it shakes out but he can always be replaced later after the jackals scatter.
