White Supremacist Pleads Guilty to 1999 Slaying of Gay Couple in California

Published: Feb 28, 2003

REDDING, Calif. (AP) - A white supremacist who admitted fire bombing three synagogues and a building housing an abortion clinic pleaded guilty Friday to killing a gay couple about two weeks after the arsons.

Under a plea agreement, James Tyler Williams, 32, will be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the shooting deaths of Gary Matson and Winfield Mowder in their Happy Valley home in 1999. He could have received the death penalty had the case gone to trial.

Authorities said Williams committed the 1999 arsons and slayings with his brother, Benjamin Matthew Williams. The two were given 30-year prison sentences for the fires.

Though no one was injured in the blazes, they caused more than $3 million in damage to the synagogues.

Benjamin Matthew Williams, who professed anti-Semitic, anti-gay and white supremacist views after his arrest, killed himself in November in the Shasta County jail.

Here's one case where liberals will be disappointed the death penalty wasn't used.

It would have saved California a lot of money if he had.

I'm eagerly awaiting the first post on this thread where someone defends the killer in a backhanded way.

If it comes, it will be by a disruptor in drag. Most of those type of things are from the dark side trying to play out their idea of what conservatives are like.

I'm not defending the killing by any means. But whether the guy was gay or not should not matter in a court. He was still killed, and gays are worth no more than the average Joe on the street.

When the jurisdiction is California, the term "the death penalty" should always be used in quotes. Polly Klaas's murderer still lives, as does The Night Stalker, as does that creep-ass little bastard who slit the nine-year-old boy's throat in a public restroom for no reason. Do they even segregate the Death Row inmates from the general population inmates in California prisons anymore?

Here's one case where liberals will be disappointed the death penalty wasn't used.

Well, I'm disappointed, anyway. This piece of crap should be buried alive in an anthill. I think you underestimate the nauseating degree of the average liberal's moral relativism, however - I've heard liberals state outright that they wouldn't even have executed Hitler.

There is no question about it, there will be SOME liberals - at least the gay community - who will be lamenting that the death penalty wasn't used. They did it with Matthew Shepherd's killers and they'll do it again.

I agree with you, I'd be all in favor of the death penalty for this one guy who is remaining. His brother must have had a pretty decent sense of justice when he killed himself.

My advice for people who feel an irresistible urge to kill a lot of people: Start with yourself.

Agreed. But that's not the kind of stuff I was referring to. Unfortunately, there is a small contingent of conservatives that are so Kool-Aid drinking that they find it hard to condemn fully someone who did something against the groups we're against (abortionists, homosexualists, poverty pimps, etc), no matter how heinous the action.

Quite possibly, and honestly, I hope that is the case, that these people are disruptors.
