Help us out, please search before posting an article.

There have been too many duplicate threads lately. A search is easy to do, but is not 100% foolproof, nonetheless, it is very effective. The Free Republic search feature only looks at words in the title (words from within the article will not work). That is why it is imperative to use the original title. To avoid having duplicate posts, prior to posting an article, search a keyword from the title only. The main search page can be found here:

SEARCH

The best method to search is to pick a key word or two from the title. If the article you are posting is, "'Blixie Chicks' Blame Conservative Web Site", start with 'Chicks' for the key word. If it is a hot topic, you might want to use two keywords, in this case, try Chicks and Blixie. For an effective search, select 'match all words' and select 'order by post time'.

Search using 'chicks' only.

Search using 'blixie chicks'.

Three words or more can also be used. Be aware, three letter words will NOT search. You must use four or more letters per word. So searching for FBI, CIA, ABC, FOX will result in no matches.

Search using FBI

Make a sticky post and put it at the top of each forum. Short and with pertinent info.

Might help newbies a lot.

Maybe if you spelled Ari's name right you might have better success. FLEISCHER.

You are right but I still don't find anything. I can't believe there wasn't a thread on it.

We've been moving them back up periodically for that reason.

I believe that all you have to do, is, go to your original post and post to your article by typing bttt, (bump to the top.) That will bring your article to the top of the page and avoid you from having to actually post the article again.

Programming questions have to be directed to John. I know he's been working on lots of new features, what order, when or if they'll be implemented, I'm not sure. The mods do not have any ability to program FR.

Can we get the "airhead celebrity" threads - Sheryl Crow, Dixie Chicks, Martin Sheen, Walter Cronkite (heh) - moved to "General Interest"? These airheads aren't worth our time.

Do a search for the article. If you find it, bump it.

How does that give others a chance to see it? Maybe I don't understand fully what's entailed by "bumping".

Part of the trouble is, I have found, that often two different newspapers will run the exact same article under different titles.

I've seen a lot of duplicates lately, and in my experience disjoint titles accounts for relatively few duplicates. (Though one I posted a few days ago about a slow "quake" was repeated today with "earthquake".)

But I've seen at least several cases of the same article from the exact same source reposted within a very few hours.

If you are checking latest posts, you might catch it. Not so if you are checking latest articles.

I think that conference where Ari ripped Helen a new one was actually about a month ago.

if you post a comment it will go back to the top of latest threads.
MY QUESTION: How about warning these dudes that post all the dups, then banning them from posting new articles. or posting. i feel like a moderator and i AM NOT! drives me nuts, i've been living her lately, and every couple of hours someone will post the same article. IF they would read FR before looking elsewhere they would SEE it's been posted.

Something about "you and I Helen are never going to agree on this so lets move on ..." My wife told me about it and I thought it was yesterdays.

If I could find the thread I could check for myself.

Absolutely! I also heard some rumors about this band called, I think, the "Dixie Chicks" saying some nasty stuff. If I find out any more info, I'll get that out, too...

Use the words "Fleischer, Helen Thomas"

I think that's the article.

Thanks I'm still going through it. I found the charade/Frence banter but still looking for the "we never will agree" bit.

Any time Ari smacks that Clinton sockpuppet around I would like to know about it. It's not like I'll see it on CNN or something (yeah, like I watch CNN).

Post a reply to the article. When a reply is made, it automatically goes to the top of the articles list.
