28 Baby Girls Found in Suitcases in China

BEIJING - Police found 28 baby girls hidden in suitcases aboard a long-distance bus in southern China, apparently being smuggled for sale, a police officer and a newspaper said Saturday.

Officers acting on a tip made the discovery Monday when the bus stopped at an expressway toll plaza in Binyang, a town in the Guangxi region, the Beijing Morning News said. Guangxi, on China's southern coast west of Hong Kong, is one of the country's poorest areas.

An officer of the Guangxi traffic police in Binyang confirmed the discovery of the babies. Reached by telephone, she wouldn't give her name or other details.

Chinese authorities say an unknown number of children are abducted every year for sale to childless families. Older girls are sometimes sold as brides in rural areas with fewer women.

The babies found in Guangxi were all under three months old, and one died after they were found, the Beijing Morning News said. It said the smugglers might have drugged them to keep them from crying and being discovered.

The babies apparently were being smuggled for sale, though police didn't know where they had come from or where they were being taken, the newspaper said. It said the bus was bound from Yulin, a rural district of Guangxi, to the eastern province of Anhui.

No relatives have claimed them, the report said.

"Those keywords seem to indicate that you blame this on President Bush."
The only keyword I am seeing is "CHINKCOMMIES" so naturally I am confused.

One of my youngest daughter's best friends was adopted from China. A beautiful, assertive (and-how!) little girl, desperate for the arrival of her long-awaited little sister. BOY does she need a sister, to move her aside a bit from center-of-the-universe. There are constant delays. Maybe that baby who just died was supposed to come here. SAD.

A few minutes ago there were different keywords.

I mistakenly thought Willie had put them there. My bad.

I didn't mean to approve baby-buying. I'm just saying that China is not making it easy for people who cannot keep their babies to get them to people who want them so much, and it's costing lives unnecessarily.

My comments on this thread have been restricted to the bizarre keywords that were initially posted apparently, it turns out, not by you.

I think that is abundantly obvious.

Well said. Supposedly the War on Drugs is responsible for drive-by shootings and overdoses, too. If we end the prohibition on consensual slavery then maybe these deaths wouldn't happen. This is all George Soros 'harm reduction' socialist thinking, for the record.

"why should the Chinese officials care about these girls.....aren't girl babies regularly purged before birth and after as well?"

NO, that is about as far from the truth as you can get.

Those days have long been gone. It is illegal in china to have tests done that determine the sex of a fetus.

Having female children in China is no longer a bad thing. Especially if she grows up to be attractive because most families can not pay the traditional price paid to the brides family when their son wished to marry. In other words, having a female child can fetch a handsome price for her family when a young man wishes to marry her.

actually, its the US government that is not making it easy to adopt children from Asia due to the fact that its quite common for the children to be abducted and then sold as has happened many times throughout the region.

Sadly, this occurred in many of the old Soviet bloc nations as well. Legitimate adoption agencies understand that there is a necessarily lengthy process involved in placing children in good homes. Unfortunately, this process also enables an adoption Black Market to develop. Uncaring parents may be willing to sell their offspring to the highest bidder. Or worse, unscrupulous people engage in infant abductions to profit from those desperately eager to become parents. It's an extremely nasty business that not only crosses international boundaries, but also within our own borders.
