They were the only airborne unit to make a combat jump in Vietnam. If you see a nam vet with a gold star on his jump wings you know what he did.

...to clear the way for armored tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles.

Key Phrase. Get ready for a big surprise up North.

You are getting the whining/gloom and doomers down pretty good with this:

But, but, but, but, but -- I thought coalition forces were losing, per Reuters/AP/UPI/AFP/ABC News/CBS News/NBC News/CNN/MSNBC, etc?

About 1,000 U.S. troops have parachuted into northern Iraq and seized an airfield in Kurdish-controlled territory

If its Kurdish controlled why are they saying 'seized'?

....the 173rd airborne brigade and seized the airfield to clear the way for armored tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles.

How are the tanks going to get there?

Wouldn't this be the largest combat air drop since WWII?

Not hardly. The 173rd made a drop in Vietnam (the only large parachute drop of that war.) The 82nd parachuted into Panama.

Exactly.

Airfields are good "landing zones" for airborne drops.

173rd Airborne (my old outfit) was the first major Army unit in Viet Nam.

After Viet Nam they were deactivated for awhile, but then reactivated and are based in Italy.

How I wish I was with them.

Oh, they also made the only combat jump in Viet Nam.

No, they are not part of the 82nd or 101st, they are a separate unit.
