How do you clear the way for armored tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles by seizing an airfield? I'm no military expert, but this doesn't seem to make sense - unless it's for air support for said vehicles Seize the airfield and fly the equipment in on heavy transports?

That was my other guess. I guess the article is just poorly written.

Ping!
Wouldn't this be the largest combat air drop since WWII?

Something is weird here. There is no reason to "seize" an airport in Kurdish territory. We're already there. Just land and save the trouble of repacking the parachutes.

The 173rd is a seperate Airborne Brigade based out of Vincenza, Italy. They were recently re-activated a few years ago, thank God.

They are securing the airfield presumably so that transports can fly the heavy units in. Now it gets interesting.

I strongly suspect that this airfield is near, not in, Kurdish-controlled territory.

Something is weird here. There is no reason to "seize" an airport in Kurdish territory. We're already there. Just land and save the trouble of repacking the parachutes. They have a Republican guard unit up there. Probably were bombing the heck out of them the last few days. These guys are there to secure the airfield for what is left until they drop the heavy armor in for the push Southward.

C5A's and other cargo planes can carry the tanks and vehicles.
This is as much warning to the Turks as it is part of the upcoming Northern Invasion of Iraq.

Here is a little history on the 173rd:
"The Troopers of the 173d Airborne Brigade (SEP) wear their combat badges and decorations with pride. During more than six years of nearly continuous combat in Vietnam, The brigade earned 14 campaign streamers and four unit citations, had 13 Medal of Honor winners, had over 130 distinguished service crosses winners, and awarded over 6,000 purple hearts, conducted the only U.S. combat parachute assault of the war, and sadly, over 1700 names of Sky Soldiers on the wall."
Sounds like an impressive outfit to me.
