What do you think will happen when SARS virus hits Iraq?!

It will not only rampage Iraq, but the entire Middle East population.

I thought I had posted a correction of the source already. It was WUSA-TV in Washington DC (formerly WTOP-TV) that issued the claim of a confirmed SARS case in a Tidewater VA patient.

I thought we already had several cases confirmed in the US, including at least two here in the Houston area. Does this mean a confirmed SARS death?

Interesting. imho, it's only a matter of time before we most certainly have SARS cases confirmed in the US. Truthfully, I look for the US to be fairly quiet as far as SARS goes, until the fall and winter.

I could be wrong, but that's the pattern that influenza usually shows--in the spring, it's in the far east. In the fall, it's in the US.

This is very scary stuff. There was a report in the Boston Globe this morning about a daycare center in my home town that was shut down because of a 3 year old boy who recently returned from China who was having flu like symptoms. My wife stays home with my kids but she met a Chinese woman the other day at Barnes & Noble who has a 3 yr old boy who goes to day care here in town. That coupled with the fact that my kids are sniffling alot this week freeked me out when I saw the story this morning. Fortunately my wife exchanged phone numbers with this woman when they met so she was able to call her and ease my fear by confirming that this was not the same child from the story.

SARS Investigation

Health officials are investigating the first suspected case of SARS in Central Virginia. They will only say the victim is a woman who lives in the Hanover Health district. That district includes Hanover, Goochland, Charles City and New Kent counties. She'd recently been out of the country and reported symptoms similar to SARS on Wednesday.

People who've come in contact with the victim have been told they could be at risk. The CDC is also investigating the case.

From TV 10 in Norfolk-

In mid-March, a Chesapeake man who had just returned from an Asian trip was placed in isolation after displaying SARS-like symptoms. He has since recovered and is not contagious.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the Chesapeake man tested positive for coronavirus. Scientists at CDC and other laboratories have detected a previously unrecognized coronavirus in patients with SARS.

"None of the suspect SARS cases in Virginia have led to additional infections," said State Health Commissioner, Dr. Robert B. Stroube on Tuesday. "We do not believe the general public is at risk for infection from SARS as a result of any of the cases in Virginia. The only people who could potentially be at risk are health care workers caring for patients with SARS and close family contacts."

SARS -- April 17, 2003

The number of suspected SARS cases in Texas remains at seven.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today reported that 208 suspected cases of SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, in 34 states are under investigation in the U.S.

All of the suspected cases from Texas had traveled to Hong Kong, Singapore or the Guangdong province of China.

The seven [total] are from: Harris (2), Collin (2), Lubbock, Fort Bend and Travis counties.

All are adults. None of the seven is hospitalized.

Four have recovered. Three are recovering. The Lubbock County resident, who has recovered, had not been in that county since becoming ill.

The Texas Department of Health (TDH) reports there is no connection between the two suspected cases from Harris County or the two suspected cases from Collin County.

TDH officials stress that all 208 cases in the U.S. are suspected cases under investigation, not confirmed or absolute.

TDH officials also said no secondary cases have been reported in Texas and that there is no indication of an increased risk of illness for the general public. They said current information about SARS indicates that spread of the illness is primarily through respiratory droplets or fluids in direct or close contact situations. More information about SARS is available on the Web at www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars. CDC updates a state-by-state Web listing of suspected case counts each workday by 4 p.m. CDT.

GOOD signs!

Maybe the first in Virginia. According to an Asian source I have, citing the WHO (I believe), the U.S. is already third in the world with 193 known cases. (As of April 15)
