Roddy Stinson: 'Avoid wearing of uniform' general warns local soldiers

"If possible, avoid wearing of the uniform when dining in public places." ? From a "Protective Measures Awareness" notice sent to San Antonio's U.S. Army personnel by Maj. Gen. Darrel R. Porr on Friday

April 11, 2003, will be remembered as one of the saddest dates in Alamo City history.

Because of recent instances of harassment of uniformed personnel, Porr, the commanding general at Fort Sam Houston, felt compelled to warn the men and women who serve under him to use caution when traveling, shopping and dining in San Antonio.

"Two separate incidents against military personnel have occurred," Porr reported. "In the first incident, two males on the city's Northeast Side made threatening gestures and pounded on the car window of a drill sergeant and his spouse while they were on their way home.

"The second incident involved two sailors, in uniform, who were accosted by several males who said, 'You'd better not go to war,' as they departed a River Walk restaurant."

Porr provided this possible explanation for the hostile actions:

"There has been a significant increase of demonstrations throughout the United States in opposition to the ongoing U.S.-led military operations in Iraq.

"As individuals voice their opinions against military operations, they tend to direct their frustrations toward governmental and military symbols."

On receiving a copy of the notice from an anonymous e-mailer, I called Fort Sam to ask for more details about the incidents, in general, and the harassers, in particular.

A post spokesman indicated that more information was available, but declined "to go there."

He then made a point of emphasizing:

"Soldiers here in San Antonio have always proudly worn their uniform because of the support for the military.

"Previously, there has never been any perceived threat. This is quite unusual.

"Even during Vietnam, San Antonio was one community that supported the military forces.

"That's one reason the general put that notice out ... because (such harassment) is so unusual in this community."

The notice included cautions other than the warning not to wear uniforms when dining in San Antonio restaurants.

Porr also recommended:

"Be cognizant of people who gather and voice their sentiments against the military efforts in Iraq. Do not get involved."

"When in public facilities, soldiers should avoid conversations related to work or military operations in general."

"Always practice the 'Buddy System' when traveling."

"When in uniform, minimize the number of stops when traveling from home to work or vice versa. Wear civilian clothing when possible."

There you have it: San Antonio, Texas, anno Domini 2003, in all its un-glory.

What's worse ...

Community leaders continue to show pitifully little support for U.S. soldiers.

Example in point:

City officials have been mute as mice since troops entered Iraq. (The San Antonio City Council, which regularly passes resolutions honoring everything from the Dallas Cowboys to Hike and Bike Week, has deigned only to observe "a moment of silence" for the troops and their families.)

Add to that palpable hush the rants of the town's Saddam Hussein apologists, and "Military City USA" can easily degenerate into a South Texas backwater, where men and women in uniform can't safely wear their uniforms in public.

"Sad" hardly describes such a miserable state of affairs.

Fortunately, all of the news surrounding the recent threats isn't dreary.

One unofficial source I talked to said he had seen the police report of the incident on the River Walk, and he provided this description of the confrontation:

"Some Marines who were nearby saw what was happening and went to the sailors' aid.

"The matter was then taken care of by combined military action."

This is the result of Michael Moore (the boor), and Saggy Suzie Sarandon giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

I go to the riverwalk every 3-4 months. It makes me proud to see our military in uniform instead of all the chongs. SA needs to do something about this. If someone can go to jail for teasing a police dog them anyone assulting our military ought to be arrested. This military policy is so wrong though. If they cower and hid then the enemy has succeeded. The soldiers need to continue to wear their uniforms and stand proudly. I think I'll skip the riverwalk next month when I go to San Marcus to shop.

The DoD posted a warning a couple of weeks ago siting a case where a dependent wife of a military man inadvertently drove through an intersection where a "peace protest" was being held. When they noticed her DoD sticker on the car they beat on the car with fists and signs and scratched the paint with keys.

Imagine the outrage if this happened to some ethnic clad visitors from south of the border or a Middle Eastern country instead of US Military members in uniform.

This story doesn't really compare, but at an Olive Garden restaurant near Ft. Lewis here in Washington state, some women asked their hostess for another table because they didn't want to have to look at a couple of guys in uniform who were there while they dined.

The hostess gave them another table.

A local talk show host pointed out that if two women had asked not to be seated near someone because they were part of a minority, they would likely have been shown the door.

They should have been in this case too. Outrageous stuff going on out there.

Man, I hate liberals.

I'm curious how this will effect the Air Force folks at Lackland. During your last week of BMT you get base liberty and usually go into town along the riverwalk area.

I never had any problems. Saw a lot of cute girls who liked my uniform ;)

Can I play, too? After 9/11 some colleges complained about the display of flags on campus. I walked around the local campus with a leather vest with a flag on the back waiting for someone to tell me they were offended. No one ever did.

There's never a damn commie around when you want one.

Agree, Bro...here is a case where that entire base should stand up and be counted and defy this illegal and unlawful order! IN fact, these troops ahould form up in Class A uniforms and march enmass into town and down the Riverwalk!

Any commander who isues this sort of disdraceful instruction should be relieved of duty and dismissed from service without pay or benefits...it makes my 27 years of service and two Purple Hearts mere folly.

Likely the reason for the anti US soldier sentiment is that the population in San Antonio is now largely mexican. and most of that population is now largely illegal.

there have been a couple of posts at free republic based on an article in the washington post and reposted in the sf chronicle--that show that Mexican public opinion is against the war in iraq. mainly because the war inspires internal US cohesion and pride which the Mexicans don't like.

a professor of mexican decent at Columbia University has caused a furor for the same reason. he has made a career of advocating the dissolution of the USA and sees a war in iraq--especially a successful war in iraq as an impediment to that goal.
