Deadly Dozen senator taken to task over claims of Catholicism
AMERICAN LIFE LEAGUE NEWSROOM ^ | April 22, 2003

Posted on 04/24/2003 10:43:55 AM PDT by topher

According to the Weekly Standard and later echoed on MSNBC's Joe Scarborough Show, Sen. Tom Daschle — a member of American Life League's Deadly Dozen — has been sent a letter from his home diocese of Sioux Falls informing him he can no longer publicly identify himself as a member of the Catholic Church because of his unrepentant support of abortion and other pro-death legislation. "The recent actions involving Daschle are totally in agreement with the teachings of the Catholic Church and make crystal clear the point of our Deadly Dozen ad: you cannot be Catholic and pro-abortion," said Judie Brown, president of American Life League.

Responding to the Weekly Standard article, both the bishop of Sioux Falls, His Excellency Robert Carlson, and Sen. Daschle refused to discuss what was supposed to be a private matter between the two men. Bishop Carlson has made clear that such a grave concern must be handled privately and should not be open to the scrutiny of the public. "We respect Bishop Carlson and his attempt to deal privately with the senator. It would truly add insult to injury if anyone in Sen. Daschle's office had anything to do with releasing private information to the media," said Brown. "It is obvious that Bishop Carlson takes his responsibility as a shepherd of the Church very seriously. We hope more bishops will follow his courageous example, and that Catholics across America will be awakened to the hypocrisy of those who go to Mass on Sunday and vote to destroy innocent life on Monday."

The Crusade's original "Deadly Dozen" ad — which featured 12 pro-abortion, "Catholic" senators — helped to bring Daschle's schizophrenic behavior to the forefront of the public debate. The Crusade for the Defense of Our Catholic Church, a project of American Life League, was established to defend and protect the integrity of the Catholic Church's doctrine from those politicians, organizations and public figures that seek to publicly undermine or abuse it.

Pardon me, but BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I can't stand Daschle, either, but just how does the Catholic Church plan to enforce its dictate? Cut out his tongue? Tell his mommie? Make him go to his room? What a ridiculous thing for the Chruch to say.

PRESS RELEASE : CFAA reminds Daschle: "Sin makes you stupid"

SUBJECT: 7,500 Days of Prayer and Fasting for Daschle's conversion reveals his "sinful stupidity"

5 PM April 19, 2003

In January, 2002, the Catholic Family Association of America (CFAA) initiated the Divine Mercy Prayer Project calling for days of prayer and fasting for the conversion or confounding of prominent pro-abortion Catholic politicians, and the encouragement of their respective bishops. CFAA believes that the growing clamor over Sen. Daschle's Catholicism is a direct result of this effort.

In reacting to the April 17, 2003 edition of The Weekly Standard story regarding instruction to Sen. Daschle by his bishop to stop calling himself a Catholic, Timothy A. Chichester, President of CFAA, said "Sen. Tom Daschle was the first recipient of this united and sustained spiritual work of mercy, and today we are seeing the blessed fruits of this undertaking." Commenting on Daschle's past year of noticeable gaffes, Chichester went on to say "The senator needs to understand that, to paraphrase St. Thomas Aquinas, 'Sin makes you stupid', and that his self-destructive behavior is in direct proportion to his prideful rejection of Sioux Falls' Bishop Carlson's solicitous efforts to help him regain a Catholic conscience."

The project was began by the distribution of a 4 part post-card brochure to people who would commit to prayer and fasting for the soul of Sen. Tom Daschle and encouragement of his bishop. CFAA passed out 30,000 of these Divine Mercy Prayer Project cards at the January 2002 March For Life in Washington DC. In addition, twenty thousand more of these cards were distributed around the country. Many individuals downloaded and printed the cards for Daschle and others from the CFAA web site .

Chichester directly contacted Sen. Daschle's office in February, 2002, as well as Bishop Carlson's office, appraising them of the efforts to gather commitments of prayer and fasting for Sen. Daschle's conversion.

To date CFAA has received pledges for approximately 7,500 days of prayer and fasting for Sen. Daschle and his bishop, and Chichester directly attributes Bishop Carlson's efforts to the power of these prayerful efforts.

Citing The Weekly Standard's Good Friday follow-up story on Daschle's "non-denial", in which it is reported that the bishop has written that "other than inviting people to pray for the senator's conversion, I do not believe it is appropriate for me to discuss my pastoral relationship with the senator", Chichester stated "We have provided the prayers and will continue to ask others to join the effort." He then added " It should be noted that the Daschle situation became public on the very eve of the novena to the Divine Mercy, which began Good Friday evening and completes on Divine Mercy Sunday."

CFAA asks Catholics to express their gratitude to Sioux Falls' Bishop Robert Carlson for his courage and leadership in taking this most urgent and necessary stance in defense of the Culture of Life and the Catholic Faith. We encourage all faithful Catholics to continue to pray and fast for Sen. Daschle's salvation and reunion with the Church, and we hope the CFAA Divine Mercy Prayer Project will foster similar positive results among the many other Culture of Death Catholic politicians.

Actually, the day that the news came out about Bishop Carlson and Senator Daschle, Pope John Paul II came out with a new Encyclical.

This Encyclical deals with those who are known to be in serious sin (such as supporting abortion) and receiving communion.

This Encyclical paves the way for Senator Daschle to be denied Holy Communion if he attends Mass -- which would be quite embarrassing if he were to get in line for Communion, only to be dismissed when it was his turn.

I am not 100% sure that is what the new Encyclical states, but I believe it gives such leeway. That would mean that Senator Daschle would have to be very careful to find "friendly priests" if he is to attend Mass.

Since he is a political figure, it would be noticed if the priest would deny him communion -- something that could happen, and generate a lot of publicity...

The letter from the Bishop paves the way for this.

The church is a private organization with a set of rules, that unfortunately are not always applied to it's priests. If a person does not follow the rules the church may withold some of its activities from people that do not follow those rules. For a time most churches have been letting a number of its rules slide and it has caused many problems in the church and the greater community.

I can't stand Daschle and I am catholic, so I hate to do it but I'll say how I would worm out of this if I were him. I'd wait for the next scandal related announcement (doesnt have to be a new case, can be a lawsuit moving forward, a rehashing editorial in the NY Times, or whatever) and announce that I was so morally conflicted over the church's mishandling of this matter that I was taking the drastic step of no longer referring to myself as a Catholic, and that I look forward to a day when the church returns to the righteous path and I can once again embrace with pride the statemet "I am a catholic!". He'd probably get a bump in his polls for taking a courageous moral stand.

Perfect Example of D'asshole and his ilk:

The Pope's Hat

The Pope is visiting DC and President Bush takes him out for an afternoon on the Potomac...sailing on the presidential yacht, the Sequoia. They're admiring the sights when, all of a sudden, the Pope's hat (zucchetto) blows off his head and out into the water. Secret Service guys start to launch a boat, but Bush waves them off, saying "Wait, wait. I'll take care of this. Don't worry."

Bush then steps off the yacht onto the surface of the water and walks out to the Holy Father's little hat, bends over and picks it up, then walks back to the yacht and climbs aboard. He hands the hat to the Pope amid stunned silence.

The next morning the topic of conversation among Democrats on the hill, Hollywood celebrities, Kofi at the UN, and in France, Germany and Russia is: "Bush Can't Swim."

Dash hole will be hurt by this. South Dakota is one of the states that has at least 25% Catholic population. In a close race against John Thune, even a small number of Catholics turning on him would be trouble. I think that that will happen and dash hole will lose his seat in part because of this episode in his history with the Church.

Perhaps I can translate:

The letter makes public the fact that there are requirements to remain a member of the Catholic Church.
Daschle's words and actions continue to be inconsistent with those requirements.
Therefore, he "should" quit representing himself as a Catholic, because, in fact, he is not.
Any claims to the contrary are false and misleading.
He has the free will to continue to be false and misleading.

...just how does the Catholic Church plan to enforce its dictate? Cut out his tongue? Tell his mommie? Make him go to his room? What a ridiculous thing for the Chruch to say.

If the church continues to point out Dasshole is falling from grace, there is no political gain for him to claim membership. Eventually excommunication could result and if he was a believer he would fear for his soul. The fact that all of his fellow Catholics would know he was going to Hell might be politically less than advantagous for his re-election.

"you cannot be Catholic and pro-abortion"

I personally know a lot of Catholics who have had abortions. I guess they are not very good Catholics. Many Catholics also take birth control pills. I guess they will burn in hell for that as well if it hasn't been decreed that it is no longer a "sin" (like meat on Fridays). God will judge everyone. I'm too damned busy.

The fact is that Churches are private organizations which have the right to remove anyone they choose from their membership.

The Catholic Church itself needs to decide if its members can be both Catholic and pro-abortion. If the answer is that they cannot be both, then its Bishops need to excommunicate those members who are pro-choice aka pro-abortion.

As far as I know, the Papacy and Bishops have not been willing to take this step.

Regardless of what the Catholic church does regarding the abortion question, you can be assured that Christ is pro-LIFE; the author of LIFE; He is LIFE. He's also the judge of the living and dead. Ouch!

Probably the same thing that the Girl Scouts would do if Tommy claimed to be a Girl Scout. State publicly that he ain't and that he is lying. For Tommy to claim he is a Catholic when he is not is no different than for him to claim he is a Mason, an Elk, a Camp Fire Girl or a Boy Scout. (Though I am sure he would make a *fine* Camp Fire Girl. He has the build for it. . .)

Even if a person has had an abortion, they can repent of it. In fact, in the Atlanta area, there are prominient Pro-Lifers who have had abortions that are doing everything they can to prevent young girls (and women) from making their mistake.

It is a sin to eat meat on Friday during Lent. However, the Catholic church has asked people not to eat meat on Friday the rest of the year (even though it is not a sin).

The Catholic Church teaches receiving the sacraments frequently, especially Holy Communion AND Penance (confession).

And the Pope is trying to get members of the conservative sect "Society of Pius X" to rejoin the church. Three of the four bishops ex-communicated will rejoin the church shortly. The fourth one has elected not to. It is unclear how many of the priests of this sect will rejoin the church.

Also, the Pope's most recent Encyclical on the Eucharist is meant to bring focus on this sacrament as well as crack down on abuses (something will be happening in the future with regards to rules to correct the abuses that have come in since Vatican II).
