Certainly shook in Suwanee. The FR reporting system is certainly the best.

The North GA gold fields were among the largest in the US .... Pre-1849 at least, but they were worked from the very early 1800's.

You can still go up that area and pan if you like.

Rumbling shakes, awakes metro Atlantans

There was a whole lot of shaking going in metro Atlanta this morning.

It was not immediately known whether an earthquake was responsible. One TV report indicated a tremor in southern Missouri, site of the New Madrid fault, but it was unclear at 5:15 a.m. whether its reverberations had reached Georgia.

Residents across Atlanta's northern suburbs were shaken awake by the rumbling sound that may have lasted up to two minutes.

One Woodstock resident reported his house shook and creaked for a couple minutes shortly after 5 a.m. Reports also came in from Cobb County.

An East Cobb resident said, "The whole house shook. I could hear the windows shaking. It lasted about 5-10 seconds."

Three huge earthquakes occurred along the New Madrid fault in 1811 and 1812. Experts estimate that they were of a magnitude of 8.0 or higher on the Richter Scale and were felt over the entire United States outside of the Pacific coast.

It would be nice if it was insignificant enough to merit only a mention from the Weather guy. Considering the number of Freepers it woke up, the Weather guy might be participating in a cover-up :).

I live in N.W. Kentucky. I am 10 miles from the Indiana border and 30 miles from the Illinois border. I was up when it happened and I felt nothing.

All the neighbors in our small town met outside in their pajamas (needless to say that does not happen often). Police and alarms in town are going crazy. Wow...

I am in Southwest Illinois (across from Perryville, MO - which is about 100 miles south of St. Louis) and I did not feel anything here.

Thanks for the thread.

I'm in Kennesaw, and already up at the computer when I felt the rumble, but it was strong enough to wake up my sound sleeping husband.

Evidently we are on the New Madras fault....the earthquake was centered in North west Alabama...4.0 on the scale...Fort Paine Al area

Earthquake centered in Fort Payne, Alabama. About 4.5 on Richter scale according to Channel 2s Karen Minton.

I live in Fort Payne, it was huge here...Things thrown off the walls. I thought it was centered at Mentone Alabama from damage reports.
