Everyone needs to remember that even though Bush has come out in "support" it is tepid at best. This awful piece of legislation will die in the house, where a coalition of rural democrats and republicans will unite. Plus, I doubt "The Hammer" will allow this to get to a floor vote if it does turn out the votes are not there (which I seriously doubt). Count On It.

As to why Bush is doing this, my guess is that he doesn't want to give the democrats an issue. After all, it's easy for them to demagouge and run commercials saying that "President Bush even opposes banning assault weapons, selling out the interests of America to the extremists at the gun lobby." I remember hearing about commercials like this in Maryland, when KKT shamefully took advantage of the sniper tragedy.

"President Bush even opposes banning assault weapons, selling out the interests of America to the extremists at the gun lobby."

But if the USSC decides that the RKBA is an individual right, knocking down the even stricter CA AW ban, is he going to like "President Bush Opposes Consitutional Right" any better? OTOH, if they do so rule, I'm not holding my breath you understand, that would be the perfect "cover" to withdraw his support, on the basis of his oath to "support and defend".

AOW and DD are already banned

Yes, I know they are banned, as are assault weapons. I'm just curious what you think about the legal difference between them. I don't agree with banning them but I certainly understand why most people want them banned. Though I can certainly kill more people in a bus on the sidewalk than you could with an assault rifle, you don't see buses being banned. I'm not going to throw away a vote to the Dems just because I disagree with Bush on one issue.

Thanks for the ping, Joe. You're doing a great job keeping track of all this.

I don't know what concerns me more...the resurgence of Rat anti-gun hysteria, or Pubbie indifference to it.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

I understand what your saying. All I'm trying to say is that it's pretty easy to convince a majority of Americans based alone on the title of the legislation. "Assault Weapons Ban", who on Earth could be against a ban on "Assault Weapons", right? However, what the liberal media won't tell people is that all "assault weapon" means is a rifle with a bayonet that can fire more than ten rounds. However, I do think that the NRA and other like minded groups should use their huge war-chests and point out the uselessness of the ban in the form of advertisements, kind of like the "Harry and Louise" commercials that so effectively destroyed Hillary!'s attempt to institute socialized medicene. I, like just about every one here on FR, want this legislation repealed.

With 150,000 American troops in Iraq, do you think the law abiding gun owners in Iraq should be allowed to keep their AK 47`s? I don`t think there is much duck hunting in Iraq.

The Assault Weapons Ban will not be renewed. No one in Congress wants to touch it because it is so close to re-election day.

My Congress representatives will still hear from me about how I feel about these tyrannical laws.

If this absurdity continues, you can put me in the "job disapprove" column for the first time since GWB took office.

I know GWB's stance is making the commies happy as he!!, but it's also making the libertarians happy as he!!, and that's who will get my vote.

I am so angry at this and these idiots in washington who flagrantly steal our rights.

We need to march on them Black Panther Party style.

When does this thing come up for a floor vote. We need to go full court press on this. I'll be damned if I'm gonna get nervous because I have a deadly bayonet.

" Gee, I feel safer already."

Those cops are a day late and about ten thousand dollars of wasted taxpayers' money short.

Brace yourselves for a ten-year temporary extention of liberal feelgood . . .

I remember hearing about commercials like this in Maryland, when KKT shamefully took advantage of the sniper tragedy.

And look who's Gov. of MD...also note that in the last election, the speaker of the House, Casper Taylor - an entrenched Democrat - defeated due to his support of Glendenning's smart gun bill. A group of 2A supporters spent their own money and time and got the word out about his support and Clinton's praise for Taylor over the bill. They even put up a billboard with the Washington Post picture of Taylor, Glendenning and Clinton taken at the signing of the bill - with the quotes from Clinton and Glendenning.

It was one of the biggest political upsets in the history of Maryland politics when Taylor lost.

And his district is a D majority and a strong Union voter base...imagine that.

Bush should not be supporting this in any way, shape, or form. It's unconstitutional. This blatant disregard for the Bill of Rights is disgraceful.

Yes, and I'm sure that they are well-trained in how to deploy and utilize those evil, black, "weapons of mass destruction" that they're toting in airports crowded with people. < /sarcasm>

Oh, that's right -- they're the anointed. My bad.

Gun-rights groups said they will try to defeat both bills

This just drives me nuts. "Gun rights groups" or "gun enthusiasts". How about "Constitutional rights groups"? "Bill of Rights suppoters"?

I won't. This and "campaign finance reform" would be the last straws.
