UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The U.S. draft resolution on Iraq would give U.N. approval for the United States and Britain to run the country for at least a year, with the United Nations and other international authorities playing a limited role, council diplomats said Thursday.

The resolution, to be introduced at the Security Council on Friday, outlines a U.S. vision for postwar Iraq at odds with that of several Security Council members, particularly Russia.

I wonder how long it will take the anti-American zealots to here in the US to show their faces and also protest this.

One question I have is, if we are attempting to phase out the oil for food program.....what does this mean?
On the oil side, Iraq's State Oil Marketing Organization would be restructured and resume selling oil, the diplomats said. Proceeds would go into an "Iraqi Assistance Fund" which would be overseen by Annan, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and a team of international auditors they select.

"Phasing out the oil-for-food program would end U.N. control over Iraq's oil revenues, which have been deposited in a U.N.-controlled escrow account. The United States wants to use that money to pay for Iraq's reconstruction. "

If the UN doesn't lift sanctions, the US should just buy all of the Iraqi oil at the UN mandated price and then the difference between the UN Price and the fair market price, the US can just designate as foreign aid.

Either that or the US could quit pumping Iraqi oil completely and let the rest of the world deal with the surging oil prices. The US is far less dependent on foriegn oil than most european countries.

It means that the UN will no longer be raking off 2 1/2% of the funds and will not be directing the contracts to those who will take advantage of the Iraqi people. It means that the Iraqi people will get more of their own money, their lives will be improved, and their country will have a chance at success.

Every time I read about the UN I wonder, why are we bothering to even try to deal with them. Obviously the UN's only purpose is to try to obstruct anything we do. Why do we have to keep going back and begging for their approval?

I think Bush should announce the UN useless, as it is, withdraw us from the UN and let them crumble into irrlevance, pontificating to each other.

What is the UN going to do to us?!

It means we are allowing Kofi & cohorts to keep stealing for another 4 months. Can't imagine why we are allowing it though -- I guess we are trying to bribe them?

I think we hold all the cards here. I don't think the Oil for Food program can be extended past June 3 over our veto.

Sure, the UN could continue to impose sanctions against Iraq, but if they do that it's the end of the UN. We would ignore it and defund it, and possibly withdraw entirely.

Which makes sense.....if the 2 1/2% isn't being funneled off to the U.N.....and the additional funds aren't being taken for 'storing the money' in the French banks. I just can't imagine that Kofi is going to perform this task out of the goodness of his heart.

A.N.S.W.E.R. probably has orders for new signs and banners at the printer's even now. It'll be just like old times for the commies and America-haters, taking the side of the Russians against their own country.

I don't know why we need the UN sanctions lifted. Ignore them and go about our business. There is a new Iraq that is responsible for its own business. The old contracts on oil are null and void. France and Russia can reapply for new contracts. Iraq's natural resources belong to it without interference from outside sources as soon as it gets its government organized. The UN interference is an attempt tp steal from the Iraqis. They can find some new victim to exploit for their purposes.

Yeah, I loved the part about independent auditors. Kofi must be sweating bullets.

If the UN doesn't lift the sanctions they are going to be exposed to the entire world for what they are. That may not stop them, but I imagine WE will. Oil for Palaces won't be renewed in June. That will leave the sanctions in full force, but I imagine we'll just ignore them and help the Iraqi people get back on their feet. If france, Russia and Germany don't want to participate in the Iraqi market, that's their business.

When the Security Council can't come to a vote, we go ahead and lift the sanctions and watch the anti crowd scream "unilateralism!"
