I may have to reconsider my opinion.

Since I really only reload four calibers, (.45 ACP, .308 for me, and 44 Special and 44 Mag for the Missus) that idea makes quite a bit of sense.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Regards,

L

You could always hunt wild boar with a spear. Doesn't take that much money, and would definitley get the adreneline pumping.

African Hunter Magazine is one of the best journals coming out of Zimbabwe. I got my first order at the Dallas Safari Club and have enjoyed it the past couple of years. They also had a story of a poacher that used a .22 long rifle to put down the big beast. What is amazing is what is NOT in the journal. There is nothing in any of the issues about anything that smells the least bit of politics.

If you can, freepmail me some details on the sterno cannon. I'm looking for a way to launch a fish rig with bait and sinker out past the breakers where we surf fish.

I'll stick with my Zastava in .458 Win Maggie. Good for everything from squirrel to cape buffulo. Don't laugh too much, it can be done.
Open up the flash hole slightly, use Fed 215 large Magnum Rifle primers, 5 gr Bullseye, and a .457 lead roundball. Tap that sucker down on top of the powder, load into the chamber, sight in, and pull the trigger. ( This can also be done with 45-70 shells. You are responsible if you decide to use this information. This is given for informational purposes only.)

You got to get a copy of Capstick's last book, "Warrior" started by Peter and finished by his wife Fiona, one of the most interesting, well-read, and intellectually savvy individuals I have had the privledge to meet. Fiona has an interesting background as well, you might even say "spooky".

Capstick was a great writer. Also had a great sense of humor. He wrote one of the funniest articles on air rifles I ever read.

BTW, although I can't recall the name, there was a South American hunter who hunted and killed all kinds of game including dangerous ones such as jaguar with a spear.

I don't think he liked it.

I would like to know the story behind it. The shoes and clothes look like something out of the '30's or '40's but why would a civilian have access to a military rifle that wouldn't have been available until at least years after the war was over. Strange.

My understanding is that the big cats actually succumb more easily to a mid-sized round than the big antelopes do -- something about the feline antomy making them more susceptible to vascular shock. I'm curious about that because I plan to go back to Botswana and Namibia next summer for a leopard -- and I'd feel a helluva lot more comfortable with a fast, flat-shooting 7 mm mag, .300 Win-mag or even a hot-loaded 30-06, than something like a .375. I don't like the idea of shooting a parabola at something six inches tall on a branch in twilight at 150 yards -- especially with the prospect of dealing with a wounded predator somewhere out there in the dark.
Thoughts?

The penetration of those 6.5 solids can be really surprising.

Indeed. Many American hunters are not aware of this but the Europeans have been wise to this for ages. The 6.5 will easily out penetrate most of the monster "Big Game" cartridges. The magic of the 6.5mm is that it has very high sectional density in standard loads, but the bullet is small enough that it can be driven to varmint cartridge velocities in cartridges that normal people can shoot. Extreme velocity plus really sick sectional density equals unparalleled penetration.

While it wouldn't be my first choice in all cases, there isn't an critter that I wouldn't feel uncomfortable shooting with a modern 6.5mm, because at the end of the day it is penetration that delivers on heavy game. The Europeans still use it for everything up to and including moose. The .33 caliber cartridges also tend to share unusual propensity for high sectional densities coupled with high velocities in standard loads. But yeah, I'm a huge fan of 6.5mm; very effective hunting cartridge and one of the most versatile around. I use it for just about everything in the Americas these days.
