It does somehow seem very appropriate to celebrate his birthday today.

Happy Birthday, Duke!!!!
I just watched a very interesting A&E Bio about the Duke, and I just saw The Shootist for the first time.

BTW, your screen name reminded me of one of my favorite John Wayne movies: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence

Great article.
I also did not know Jimmy Stewart lost a son in Vietnam. Jimmy was another great one, actor and American.

The New York Times called it (The Green Berets)
"unspeakable ... rotten ... stupid." The New York Times: "unspeakable...rotten...stupid."
I remember in high school we were showed a film which was narrated by the Duke. When he introduced himself on the screen, the entire male population of that classroom leaped to their feet and applauded.

He was my father's hero. Who will be the next one? Mel Gibson? I dunno. Maybe he was one of a kind.

Yet John Wayne was undaunted. "That little clique back there in the East has taken great personal satisfaction reviewing my politics instead of my pictures," he often said. "But one day those doctrinaire liberals will wake up to find the pendulum has swung the other way."
